Old Salem Cafe — Restaurant in Marshall

My friend and I, who live 90 minutes apart, wanted to meet and have coffee. We picked Old Salem Cafe because it was centrally located; neither of us had been there before. Our plan was to meet for an hour or so, drink some coffee and be on our way.

I decided to bring the last of my homemade cherry cake for my friend to try. The waitress gave me a dirty look and then scolded us for bringing our own food!

Now, I understand that this place makes their money by serving food and drink, so on the surface, I’m sympathetic to people bringing food to avoid buying food. But, that is not what we did. We never planned to buy food (it was 10am), I had just a small sample to share with my friend.

The waitress made an assumption that was not true and was rude to us for no good reason. I ordered another cup of coffee and left a normal tip. The coffee was fine. The outside sitting area was nice.

I won’t say that I will never visit this place again, but I won’t go out of my way to visit there again. I guess the waitress would have been happier if we would’ve met in a park and not purchased anything from Old Salem Cafe; maybe that is what we will...

I wanted something different like a traditional meal and did not want the normal places. Old sales is a local bar and restaurant in Marshall's that has a local following. I am not a local, but I have stopped and had a few meals here as well as sit at the bar and have a beer or two. It is a small place that serves food all day. They have breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food is ok, I prefer breakfast. I came on this trip for dinner. My wife and I had the turkey dinner, mashed potatoes, and green beans. I had the same, but with corn, they forgot the mashed potatoes for both. Had to ask for it, and it had brown gravy, not turkey gravy. I was not pleased with the meal. The service was OK. I think it can be a place you can try and love it or not feel welcomed. I think it is worth the try. I do not go here often it is not my beaten path kind of place. Dont believe the high reviews. We did and were greatly disappointed. Don't understand the reviews. Service was poor. Waitress, if that is the title she should be given, did promptly give us our drinks, but that is where her abilities ended. Waited excessively long for our order to be taken. When we got up to leave, the manager thanked us. She was sitting at the table right next to us. We expressed our disgust that our order wasn't taken and the three workers on the floor was going everything else, and our waitress thought messing with Mayo jar was more important.
