Awful. This place is AWFUL. I was so excited to have found a German restaurant nearby that I didn't even check the reviews before bringing our group of 7 people here for dinner. Where do I start?
If you're expecting authentic German food, you won't get it. You'll get a sad attempt at it. It's unpalatable. If you're expecting great service, you won't get that either. If you're there "too late," they'll start cleaning up the restaurant and, most irritatingly, VACUUMING while you're still eating. Our waitress was vacuuming when she was supposed to be serving a very large group who, surprisingly, actually wanted to converse and hear each other talk. This was difficult with a vacuum running next to us and behind us. I'm still surprised she didn't just take our food out from under our bosses and shoo us out! She might as well have. What was possibly the most baffling thing was that on their dinner menu, they state that a simple, clean, empty plate would incur a charge of $7! They don't even want people sharing their food!!! They demand that each person orders his or her own full entree! How absolutely tactless! I was disgusted by this, and then how over-priced their awful food was. Their beer and wine menu wasn't even that impressive, and yes, all of that was way over-priced as well. The Ale House in Columbia has a better selection of beer (AND at a reasonable price). The best thing they had here was the baked brie, which I can make at home.
Save your money. Save the stress. Save the headaches. DO NOT GO HERE. I should have read the reviews first. Please save yourself the trouble and trust all of us who made this mistake and put in the effort to write our reviews of warning.
If you have the time, go to Frederick, Maryland and eat at a truly authentic place called Dörner Bistro. I've met the owners and base staff, and they speak German (I think one guy was from Austria). Their pretty inexpensive, they host an Oktoberfest every year, and their food is delicious, their beers amazing. This is what I thought I was going to get here at this restaurant. What I got was an embarrassing nightmare.
P.S.: I've never lived in Germany, but I was there for a month a few years ago. I love food, and I are so many different authentic German foods during my time there. I know what German food should taste like. We stayed in Bavaria the entire time, and it was incredible. This restaurant is a sad joke compared to...
Read moreI’ve never written a restaurant review before, but after this experience, I felt compelled to share. My partner and I decided to try this place during happy hour since we often drive by it, and he loves this type of food. Upon entering, we immediately noticed a musty, mildew-like smell that we shrugged off, thinking it might be part of the restaurant’s vibe (although there was also a dog inside, which raised some questions about health standards). We weren’t greeted for a few minutes, so we took the initiative to walk ourselves over to the bar.
We ordered the wurst platter, which, unfortunately, was a disappointment—aside from the horseradish, which was the only redeeming part. It was the first time I’ve seen my partner leave an appetizer unfinished. I ordered an orange crush from the happy hour menu, and my partner got a large beer. However, when we received our drinks, my partner’s beer was served in a small glass, while everyone else’s beers came in large glasses. We were the only Asian people at the bar, and it wasn’t until we saw another POC guest arrive and receive the same smaller beer glass that I started to feel uncomfortable.
As we ate, the bartender never checked on us once, and it felt as though we were completely ignored while the other customers, who were all white, received all the attention. I was genuinely shocked by the experience, especially in Hanover, MD. It was disappointing and honestly felt like a case of unfair treatment. I don’t think I’ll...
Read morewe have been to brauhaus several times in the past, but not for about a year. in that year, things seem to have changed significantly. we were the only table in the restaurant. it was the first visit for one in our party and she is of direct german heritage, so she wanted to take her time to make her choice. when her sandwich arrived it wasn't what she expected, so she asked if it was possible to change it. the server was less than professional about this interaction and actually corrected, nearly argued about what it was that she wanted. i decided to try the crab pretzel, as i have enjoyed the crab dip in the past. the pretzel seemed to be stale. attempts to cut it yielded a flat 'chop', instead of an actual cut, that's how tough it was. i ended up leaving a large portion of it behind. would not have bothered me except that it's a $14 pretzel. i should have just gotten an additional order of crab dip instead. for a german restaurant, they do an excellent job of crab dip. after our friends interaction with the server i opted not to say anything about my pretzel. i also wasn't sure what could be done about it, since there was no one else in the restaurant, i guess they just weren't keeping things rotated fresh. we used to really enjoy the atmosphere at the brauhaus, the servers wore the german dresses and were very knowledgeable of the cuisine and beverages available. if we return it will only be for the crab dip, and we will...
