After touring the US Naval Academy on Sunday afternoon my family and I decided that we would visit Yellowfin since a member of my party dined there before and it was in the vicinity. When we initially arrived the hostess seemed a bit bothered as we entered the restaurant but that did not deter us from partaking in the dining experience. After we were seated we began to admire the amazing view and at that point, a few members of my party had to use the lavatory. The same abrupt hostess was walking by and I asked her where the restroom was. Her body language clearly indicated that I bothered her with my uncomplicated question. We proceeded back to our seats, viewed the menu and placed our orders. After we enjoyed our meals I asked the waitress what was the desert that came with the kid's meals? She proceeds to look at me as if I didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about. She had a look on her face as if she didn't know what possessed me to ask such a silly question. She then says desserts don't come with the kid's meals. I then open the kid's meal directing her attention to the section of the menu given to the children which clearly indicates it at the top of their menu. She then says "Oh I didn't know the kid's meals came with deserts". After she discovers this she comes back to inform me the dessert is an ice cream sundae and my son and nephews were excited. I then tell ask her to have the staff put their deserts in carry out containers. She then comes back to tell me that the kitchen staff told her that they would melt. I then inform her that we have an hour long drive ahead of us. It was a bit insulting to come back and tell me something like this as if I lacked common sense enough to know that something like ice cream needs to be eaten immediately. I feel that as a patron it is not your job to attempt to be unaccommodating and rebut why you can't oblige what I thought was a simple request. Besides, I asked her to place them in carry out containers so the kids could consume their treats during the hour-long drive home. The waitress also informed me that the establishment had no carry out utensils which I thought was unbelievable when I asked about them. She eventually brought some out. We proceeded to settle our bill and as we exited the establishment the two hostesses covering the front area were so engulfed in a conversation that when we said had a good day, the abrupt hostess seemed to be slightly bothered that she had to cut her conversation short just to greet us with an unenthusiastic have a good day. I also observed the mannerisms of this same rude hostess as she seated other guests while we were dining. Trust me I'm not one to make a scene or very rarely do I complain but after enjoying such a lovely getaway weekend it was a bit disheartening that the dining experience was lackluster due to staff. I not attempting to cause any trouble but I just wanted to inform the management of this experience because oftentimes management is unaware of how patrons are being treated. My belief is that maybe if they are notified, staff can be properly trained to understand that each patron should be greeted properly and be made to feel like they matter. In addition, the wait staff should be knowledgeable when serving customers because I , as a customer, should not have been made to feel like I was uninformed of the menu when I clearly read it before ordering. Staff should realize the significance of the treatment of guest because no matter how great the food or waterfront view may be it could deter customers from returning for future visits. Thanks for...
Read moreRecently dined there for my bday on a Sun between 4-5p. Place was relatively empty and there was a small wait. However, the hostess was kind enough to give us a window seat/table. View was amazing. Upon being seated there was dust and debris on all the glass cups (interior/exterior) and debris and hair on the mini plates. Our server had no personality whatsoever and even started off with bringing the incorrect beverages. I only dined with 4 people (2 kids, myself and my husband). There was blonde hair strands on my husbands silverware. Fries were ordered as a appetizer for the kids they were good. A cream of crab soup was ordered which contained many shells and was unpleasant to consume. Not only were my gums cut in the process because of how large the shells were-but there were entirely too many in the soup to enjoy. Flavor wise the soup was medicore but Ive tasted better. No additional appertizers or alcoholic beverages were ordered. We simply placed our order immediately which required us telling our server we were ready (because she kept walking off and never planned to ask when we were ready to order). A large party of about 10 ppl came and sat down for a celebration (clearly they were celebrating something because there were balloons) and to our surprise they were all served before us. We had been in the restaurant and placed our order at least 20mins prior to them arriving but yet they all received their food. The sad part is that we ordered simple food items that can be made quickly. A pepperoni pizza, fried shrimp and two single crab cake meals. Our server came after disappearing (thought her shift ended and she left since she waa gone for so long) and stated to us that she will check on our food because the kitchen is backed up. With the place practically empty I wonder how backed up it could be or is it that she knew the table behind us got their food before us and we felt some type of way as anyone else would. Our food was delivered 10mins after she gave us that fabricated story. Food critique: my sons shrimp were bland and flavorless with some weird aftertaste. Ive never been unimpressed with fried shrimp but these were horrible for $14 on a kids menu. My other pizza loving son can eat pizza everyday and seemed to be uninterested in his pizza. Usually can eat a whole pizza in one sitting and still had a lot left on his plate. My husband and I had one crab cake w/ green beans and wild rice. The crab cakes were super bland with no flavor or color whatsoever. The outside was stringy, browned and crisped like a hashbrown. We were able to eat it with the tatar but we had made up our minds that we would go to Timbuktu’s next time and never return. Our string beans were crunchy although they had been pan seared. They weren’t sauteed long enough for enjoyment. It was equivalent to going to a supermarket and taking a fresh bean out the produce isle and eating it on the spot. Rice was hard and lacked flavor as well. Uncle Bens would’ve done the plate justice. Needless to say we paid without complaint and even left our horrible server a 10% tip although she probably could’ve used a 6%. We usually tip 15%-20% based on service. WILL NEVER RETURN even if a free meal was offered. Not sure what the hype or reviews are about but this place is horrible. Im not even a picky eater; I love food. This place is not worth the money and looks...
Read moreThe food was good - not great - but good. My waitress was part of the staff that served a large group.
It seems as if those tables took priority over her other ones. As a result, I had to wait longer for everything - my beverage, take my order, food and check.
At one point, I had to leave my table to find her just so I could get my soda. When I found her, she was chatting with some of her co-workers.
I ordered cream of crab soup before I selected my dinner. The soup arrived to my table lukewarm so I had to send it back.
After approximately 40 minutes, the manager took my order. By this point, I hadn't seen the waitress since I asked her to bring my soda. Fun fact - she still didn't bring the soda.
After I finished my meal, I waited about 20 minutes for someone to bring me the check. Finally, the manager came to the table and I asked for the check.
I also shared with him my concerns about the poor service that I received. He shrugged them off by saying that the she was waiting on the larger group. I guess that was supposed to make me feel better about her not being available to service my table.
The waitress brought the check to me as if she hadn't been missing in action during most of my visit. I paid for my meal only because the service was nonexistent.
Service professionals must understand that a tip is a gratuity - not a birthright. You can't provide bad service and expect to be rewarded for it.
Hopefully, the large table rewarded her handsomely. That is where she invested her energy and good customer service skills.
On a positive note - Yellowfin has a beautiful dining area. It overlooks the water. The view of the sunset was perfect. The hostess was friendly and accommodating. I have been to this restaurant several times with no complaints. Guess they were having an off night. I am sure that I will return again.
I am leaving this review because they need to know that ignoring smaller tables in favor of larger tables is...
