It was very fun to experience a ferry ride across a river! The Merrimac Ferry might be the last free ferry in Wisconsin. It connects the east and west sides of the Wisconsin River across Hwy 113 in the city of Merrimac, WI. The wait for the ferry depends on how many cars need to cross at any particular time. I waited for 1 round trip of the ferry, which took 7 minutes in each direction. There are ice cream stores on each side of the river. I didn't realize those were there, so as I was waiting the 14 minutes, I could have been enjoying a cone. According to my friends, I missed a big part of the experience, because I didn't have a cone. Oh well. I felt very safe on the ferry. A few people hopped out of their cars to get a better view of the river...so I did, too. Feeling the fresh air and the motion of the water added to the fun time. I would definitely...

Merrimac Ferry Landing Concessions is a summer time staple for us. As we live nearby, we have a rule. You MUST ride the ferry to go get ice cream. So, we eat our ice cream on the Merrimac side, while the Merrimac people eat on the Lodi side. Adam, the proprietor is a real gentleman, and scoops a mean ice cream cone! Lots of variety of locally sourced ice cream at very fair prices. Whether your waiting on the ferry to get to your destination or this IS the destination, make time for ice cream. There's always time...

Very unique experience if your willing to drive a few miles out into the country. Situated on the Wisconsin River is a free, 24/hr, 365 day a year (unless sub-freezing temps) car ferry. It is closed during the cold winter months. Seems like it fits up to 12 vehicles at a time. Very scenic ferry ride with a beautiful view of the railroad bridge crossing over the river. It takes about 20 minutes to and back so the wait isn't too long. There are ice cream shops on one side as well as...

The ice creams are absolutely delightful, and the service is super quick. Pricing is good considering the taste is just heavenly. The shop is strategically located at both the banks of the river, so you can have an ice cream either before you board the ferry, or after getting off it. Would strongly advise on trying a different flavour on both the times. ;) Good view of the river, to savour the ice cream in absolute bliss.
