It was very fun to experience a ferry ride across a river! The Merrimac Ferry might be the last free ferry in Wisconsin. It connects the east and west sides of the Wisconsin River across Hwy 113 in the city of Merrimac, WI. The wait for the ferry depends on how many cars need to cross at any particular time. I waited for 1 round trip of the ferry, which took 7 minutes in each direction. There are ice cream stores on each side of the river. I didn't realize those were there, so as I was waiting the 14 minutes, I could have been enjoying a cone. According to my friends, I missed a big part of the experience, because I didn't have a cone. Oh well. I felt very safe on the ferry. A few people hopped out of their cars to get a better view of the river...so I did, too. Read moreVery unique experience if your willing to drive a few miles out into the country. Situated on the Wisconsin River is a free, 24/hr, 365 day a year (unless sub-freezing temps) car ferry. It is closed during the cold winter months. Seems like it fits up to 12 vehicles at a time. Very scenic ferry ride with a beautiful view of the railroad bridge crossing over the river.
