El Tenampa Mexican Grill y Bar — Restaurant in Mexia

We took my mom here for her birthday as a family - party of 6. It was a Friday night and we didn’t realize it was karaoke night - so we have to take a little responsibility for not knowing that fact. But I will say - it was just so incredibly loud in the entire restaurant. It made it incredibly difficult to even talk to the person next to us or across from us.

This was my first time here and my family frequent this restaurant often - so they recommended the chunky guacamole & it did not disappoint! So very good! There was literally like a whole half of an avocado in the bowl (which was huge!). I’m not a fan of thick chips and there’s are thick - but that, in no way, means that what I prefer is best. They were good though as was their salsas - they serve a hot red salsa and a medium spicy tomatillo-avocado style salsa that is cold. Both were good.

We ordered two plates of fajitas - I don’t recall exactly which one it was (they have more styles of fajitas than I’ve ever seen at a restaurant…lol. And this is not a bad thing.) but it came with chicken, beef and several butterfly shrimp and I have to rave about the fajitas - they were absolutely amazing. The shrimp were just incredible and the chicken was juicy and tender (not at all dry or overcooked), the beef was mouthwatering and all of it was marinated and had so much flavor. There were tons of perfectly grilled onions and peppers. Just too notch.

The service was great and the prices are reasonable by any standard.

Side-note: On another recent outing here, my mom left her cell phone on a stand on the way out of the door - the manager went above and beyond to contact my mom’s emergency contact displayed on her phone and kept it safe until she got back to get it. That is above board & deserves...

First time visit to this restaurant. We ordered the fajitas for two with beef and chicken. We got a cheese enchilada on the side to give it a try. The fajitas were good and plenty for the money you’re spending. The side dishes were good; guacamole, pico de gallo, and such. Beef was tender and better than the chicken which was a rare treat. The enchilada was good.

The outside of the restaurant was fine but when we walked in the door we found a well decorated and completed restaurant that was clean, comfortable and made for a good atmosphere.

Service was awesome; two gentleman that helped us did great and were very friendly and upbeat.

We’ll be back next time we come to town to...

Terribly overpriced and subpar food but if that’s not bad enough, they charged us $8.50 for a slice of birthday cake that we didn’t ask for and they didn’t tell us about until we got the check. How is that even legal? They took the charge off our bill but not before telling us how most people don’t care about it. Well I’m not sorry if I can barely afford to take my 9 year old out to a “nice” place for his birthday and then get a surprise charge I didn’t account for and I’m pissed about it.
