Excellent! My 1st experience was at their awesome food truck visiting over in Bristol borough at the Odd logic brewery and I was super impressed with the QUALITY of the sandwich. We've all had great cheesesteak but here it's a whole package of fantastic rib eye steak meat and tasty toppings on the best pretzel long rolls ever! I would compare the fluffy texture to the Bristol Amish market pretzels, not the thin dry pretzels of some chain pretzel sandwiches. The second my tongue touched the roll I literally realized this was an authentic pretzel NOT a roll just looking like a pretzel. I ordered the South Philly Philly which has real whiz and nicely chopped in-fried onions. No meat grizzle, no chewy funk, this is a memorable sandwich moment! My next visit was at their own location which is in a residential area so don't think you're messing up when you're on your way. I used Google directions on my phone and it's really easy to get to. We tried their cheesesteak egg rolls which you can choose to get an additional filling in and I got the French onion which is a cream cheese based spread with the frizzled breaded thin fried onions which was a very nice accompaniment to the appetizer and then it is all rolled up in egg roll and they're very fat and delicious. I also ordered the bacon cheeseburger fries. This is not how I expected it to come and it was so much better than I imagined it being and I expected a lot after my first terrific experience. The hamburger meat is chopped and then the meat and the cheese and bacon were all on top of perfectly cooked fries which were larger than shoestring and smaller than steak fries. They were perfect to hold up with the mouthfuls of meat. The portions on everything that we've gotten so far are very generous also by the way. I took a while to write this review after my first experience because I had so much to say and all of it positive. The owners were very friendly and the workers at the Jay's location we're very nice and helpful and they were even bringing the food out to the cars once it was done. Inflation is causing the prices of food to go up everywhere so at this eatery I totally felt like the money I spent on absolutely everything I purchased was totally reflected in the quality of the food... which we got 2 meals out of. If you like cheese steaks you absolutely must stop here. They also have gluten-free options and you can get regular buns as well. Also check the pictures they have some nice outdoor seating. They do have shortened hours. I believe they're closed Monday and Tuesday and that they close at 8:00 on their other days. But as we've noticed in most restaurants, hours of operation seem to be pretty fluid so I would suggest that you call or check online. My most recent visit...
Read moreShort version - unless you're looking for gluten free or celiac friendly food, this place is nothing special.
Long version - I've ordered out from Jay's a couple of times at this point, and consider this place to be pretty overhyped for what is really a small bit better than a pizza shop cheesesteak. Each time I've ordered I've gotten the same thing - cheesesteak w/ cooper sharp on a regular roll, and once the place messed up and I got the pretzel roll.
Appearance - the cheesesteak looked like it came from any corner pizza shop in Bucks. Cheese was melted good but not spread throughout, and mainly found on the bottom. For a place that has "Steak" in its name, the product itself looks completely average at best. When you have spots close by like Cafe Carmela, Curly's, and Berardi Bros putting out cheesesteaks that are incredibly next level, Jays leaves a lot to be desired.
Flavor/Taste - Again, completely average. The steak meat tastes like it's barely seasoned. Seriously, you have STEAK in the name of the place, and it's a phoned in flavor effort. The owner will loudly boast and suggest to get the "beer dip" sandwich, which replaces the standard cheese with some cream cheese concoction, as if that is the genius solution that would take your tastebuds to some sort of Parkland flavortown. Why anyone would want to replace gooey cheese with the texture and consistency of cream cheese is beyond me, and the fact that you don't see any other cheesesteak place offer this just tells me it's not the brightest of ideas.
The standard roll is fine. The pretzel roll wasn't really my thing and really comes off as yet another gimmick to cover up the fact that the steak meat lacks flavor.
The boneless wings are low key the best thing on the menu though. If they changed the name to Jay's Wings and Steaks, they'd probably be on their 6th franchise location and the owner would be counting money on a beach somewhere.
Value - comparable to other pizza shops in the area, with the possibility of it being higher if you go with extra toppings or modifications. The gluten free prices seem to be pretty high when compared to the non GF items, but I guess that's going to be the case when the owner drives to Vermont for GF rolls vs partnering with a local small business bakery.
Overall, this place and owner seems to be a champion of the celiac/GF community, and that's great, but I feel like if this place didn't offer those options, the overall Google rating would be 1-2 points lower than it currently is. However, if you're looking for a great cheesesteak in the Lower Bucks area, there are options that make this place...
