As many have noted, Jagz is not a trendy spot in SoHo with interpretive, cutting edge food. In fact, one might go as far as to say that the decor and even some of the culinary choices date into the 1990s (i.e. edible flowers and pan sauces on steak). And you know what? Neither my wife or I cared at all. This place delivered on all of the aspects which are truly important.
Was the service good? Absolutely...it was precisely what I would want; kind, attentive, and helpful without being forced, contrived, or overbearing.
How were the prices? I found the prices downright reasonable for the quality of food. In fact, I think if I wasn't trying to be at least somewhat "good" with my diet, we'd go back tomorrow night!
How was the food? Despite my previous, apparent slight at the steak with pan sauce being a 1990s type thing, I can't help but agree with them. The New York Strip I had with a Green Peppercorn Brandy sauce was exceptional. I would go as far as to say it was one of the most delicious steaks I've had in the last several years. The sauce was absolutely perfect on the steak and it shook my "a good steak needs nothing on it" purity to the bone. The sear was excellent and they absolutely nailed med-rare, as ordered. Lastly, the cut of meat itself was delicious, with good marbling, minimal gristle, and a great flavor/tenderness. The side veggies were fresh and cooked to perfection and my rice pilaf was nice (and if nothing else, a great way to soak up the remaining pan sauce!).
My wife had the fettuccine Alfredo and upgraded to get veggies on it; similar to a primavera. She's a vegetarian and you can imagine that she somewhat limits my choices in steakhouses. I won't drag her to places without something that catches her fancy and I was delighted that Jagz has a few options for someone like her. Well, she absolutely raved about her dinner and put it near the top of all variants of that dish that she's had through the years (and that list is very long).
We both thoroughly enjoyed our salad and the bread and finished our meal off with a Grasshopper Pie slice (shared it, as it was very generous). It was delicious and prepared exactly how you'd want.
In conclusion, I couldn't care less that Jagz isn't trying to continually reinvent itself. Much like my beloved Rizzos in Crabtree, PA (which is straight out of a 1980s mafia film), a great restaurant doing things well doesn't need to change. I am sure my wife and I will return to Jagz in the future and I hope it...
Read moreTerrible experience here and the "owner" is extremely unprofessional.
Arrived with my girlfriend to this establishment and to be honest was impressed at first. Decent decor, nice atmosphere, the bread was great, wine was good, and our appetizer was great as well. However when it came to our meals we were appalled at the food itself. The daily soup was "Jamaican black bean" it had little flavor, was lukewarm, and tasted like boiled black beans. My Caesar side salad was edible but, their dressing has little to no flavor and the lettuce was soggy.
Then we received our entrees....
She had ordered the exotic mixer from the exotic portion of the menu. Buffalo filet mignon, duck breast, and quail, with assorted sauces. The duck was flavorless and chewy, the buffalo tasted like water.... no flavor. And the quail was actually pretty good. She took one bite of each, when our server came back to the table she asked if she could send it back and just get the quail entree. The server became very rude and said, "at this point, no. There is nothing wrong with that plate."
I had ordered the chicken fettuccine alfredo, while the presentation of my plate was okay... I could have made the same meal at home more flavorful using canned alfredo sauce. Just utterly disappointed. So we asked for the check and a box for my leftovers. (Maybe if I'm desperate or lazy I'll eat it before I toss it)
So I paid our check and even tipped 10% even though our server became very rude and standoffish. While waiting for the check I could observe the waitstaff talking behind the counter and got the strong feeling they were talking about my girlfriend and I because she wanted to send her food back.
We left and my girlfriend called to talk to the manager about our experience and to simply ask what their policy was when a customer (who ordered one of their more expensive meals) is not satisfied with their food. A manager came on the line and said she was the owner, my girlfriend repeated the question asking about their policy for a customer who is not satisfied with their food. The lady then attempted to talk over my girlfriend while she was asking the question, she then hung up on my girlfriend. If this is the level of customer service from this place. I suggest you take your business elsewhere before ordering overpriced food that tastes...
Read moreMy wife and I were out for day early Valentine's dinner. We had our kids at an event and I setup a reservation a couple days ago. We sat down at our table and had delayed interactions with our waitress. That's to be expected however an hour into our dinner, we still hadn't gotten our meal, I was walking to the restroom and a waitress, who turned out to be the incompetent manager, with a tray full of large cups of beer and other alcohol jetted out of the bar area and ran into me. Covering me in all types of alcohol, soaking my arm, shirt, and pants beyond just the outer layer of my clothes. My right shoes was filled with alcohol so much that the alcohol was sloshing back and forth. The manager offers "you need a couple of knapkins?" I said it would take much more than a couple and move to the restroom to attempt to clean myself up. It was useless, I was wearing brown pants. I reeked of alcohol and it looked like I urinated on myself. I left the bathroom to go to my table, humiliated as I walked past staring guests. I then Inform my wife of what happened, we asked for a manager and about 10 minutes later the same lady who ran into me showed up. She was noticeably non apologetic, but had nothing to say other than she was sorry. I know how that sounds but she truly didn't care and offered no help or true sincerity. I said we are leaving and she runs off, I had to flag her down to pay for our appetizer and truly she showed no care at all. I get accidents happen, and it was probably unavoidable, but an accident nonetheless and would have been fine however her response and reaction was inexcusable. I wasn't looking for anything for free, and wanted to spend good money on a good meal and good evening with my wife but this "managers" rudeness was disgusting. I have eaten at restaurants hundreds of times and have never left a bad review, ever, even if we had delayed food or a less than desirable waitress, which happens and we are always in good humor. But the way this manager handled herself and the situation was abhorrent. I am truly disappointed in this manager, not the rest of the staff because they did well given how crowded it was. The manager, whom wouldn't give me her name even after I asked ruined what I had hoped would be a nice surprise of an evening for my wife and I. I am very disgusted, embarrassed, and...
