High Desert Cafe — Restaurant in Monticello

We ate here for lunch. First of all the reviews looked so good so we thought we would try it as we went thru town. We had to wait in line for about 40 mins to order. One lady takes your order at the counter and she also brings your food to you. Another girl works frantically making your order while another in the back takes care of the hot foods. The bus boy clears your table and I think we saw him taking food to a couple people. We sat outside which was nice with a breeze. Probably the best part of the meal. I ordered a club wrap which was ok, and a side salad. My husband ordered a bagel club. No where on the sign does it say that it’s a whole grain bagel. He can’t eat that so really that was our fault for not checking. He had avacado on his sandwich and no where did it say that. He ended up just mixing everything together off the bagel, and made a salad which was ok. We didn’t tell them about their mistake with my husbands order, the avacado, because we would of had to wait longer. I don’t think we would return. Older woman seemed to be in charge. We wanted lunch but older woman kept yelling out no lunch for 15 min!! They let us order a bagel with specific ingredients. Long wait first bagel came with 3 extra ingredients and missing one ingredient. Took bagel to counter, older woman wrote down ingredients. Longer wait for next bagel and it arrived with egg which was not ordered and skimpy on other ingredients. Asked to see older woman. After a wait again she appeared and said “so you’re unhappy again…we explained and she said she has a Mexican cook that doesn’t understand English, they don’t take special orders and the eggs were minimal cost as if that made a difference. Luckily no egg allergy. Reluctantly we received a $3 refund. My burrito and the iced tea were great but the attitude was unacceptable to say the least. We were blamed for their missteps. There will be no accountability if the owner responds as we have seen this on other reviews. No...

This cafe could be 5 stars if staff were more communicative and were more friendly to guests. I asked staff for a side of blueberries. She said yes. I never got them so finally figured out I should go out front to order and pay for them. She couldn't tell me that? The syrup was refrigerator cold. Warm or at least room temperature would go a long way in making the French toast really good! I wish they had offered me the option of blueberries with the French toast giving me the option of saying yes or no. This cafe could be five stars if staff were just given some training and share these reviews with them to know what guests expect so they are meeting or exceeding our expectations. You might even sell a lot more blueberries! : )

We loved the outdoor seating on the porch under the lovely elm trees!

We enjoyed the avocado toast - very simple...
