Recently opened in the Colorado Outdoors project as will likely be one of the cornerstone business in a 20± unit "flex" project. Moving off Townsend Ave. gave it 500 more sq. ft. or so plus a 600 sq. ft. The In the new space they've made it comfy and pleasing without complicating it. Lots of windows. seating, and a bar fir a half dozen customers. The Wednesday night we were there about 6 pm and the place was full with 6-8 waiting for tables (indicating that reservations are in order).
We thought the wait would be long but the competent staff got to us quickly and the food did too. I had the Angel hair pasta with shrimp and very fresh veggies and my wife had chicken Marsala. Both were perfectly prepared and presented and had all the flavor you'd want. There are many standard Italian items on the menu and 12 or so pizza choices, Our check was under $50 and included a glass of wine. There are lots of other items on the menu that we will certainly be back to try.
If this is an example of the businesses that will be attracted to the Colorado Outdoors project, Montrose will be in for many years of quality growth with excellent businesses Bravo!
1/27/2023 We had dinner at Sofia again last night and the food and service was great. They wouldn't take reservations over the phone about 5 hours before 6 pm so we dropped by at 6 and only had a 10 minute wait until a table opened up. (They only have about 15-16 tables and a bar that seats six or so.)
The chicken Marsala was as good as I remember and wife had chicken cacciatore, which was also excellent. We started with a Caesar salad and the Romaine was crisp and tossed with just the right amount of a tasty dressing. The food presentation was perfect and the staff attentive and there when you wanted them to be.
The place is noisy, not just when it's full, but really noisy. It's a single smaller room with nothing soft on the walls or soft baffles hanging from the ceiling that would absorb sound and soften the room. It could use an air-trap entrance during the winter as the large entry door lets in cold air that makes it way pretty far into the room.
And (this is a regular gripe), what is it with paper napkins in Montrose? Did the whole town run out of woven cotton? A place like Trattoria di Sofia (and a few other places in Montrose) should have cloth napkins. It's a little thing that adds a whole bunch of class to any restaurant.
Will we be back? Damn right! The pasta and pizza menu is quite reasonable in price and the beef and lamb more expensive but certainly within reason. The small wine list is quite adequate too.
8/23/2024 Since we were there last the Trattoria has added cloth napkins and has installed baffles on the ceiling to substantially cut down sound their once noisy room. Fabulous! This shows real attention to their customers' comments and has made visits even more pleasant.
As always, the food and service...
Read moreI originally gave this only 2 stars because of service. This was one of my favorite restaurants so I felt I needed to update based on another visit. We went to dinner here recently with friends and I will say that the service has greatly improved. The food has always been good. Glad to see that the owners have listened and done something about the service
The only reason I give this 2 stars is because the food is good. The service was HORRIBLE. After waiting patiently to be seated because yes they were busy we waited 45 minutes before we had any attention even though I did flag someone down to ask for a different glass of water because mine had a long dark hair in it. The server demanded to see the hair. Seriously?! Just bring me a new glass. I asked when someone would come by and take our order She rudely said be patient someone will be with you soon. 25 minutes later our server shows up to take our orders and when we complained about waiting so long she just shrugged and had no response. Our order came out fairly quickly but they never asked if we wanted another glass of wine or checked back to see if everything was OK. I again had to flag her down and request another glass. She told my companion that they were out of Chardonnay. No suggestions of something else. We had to ask for the check and then ask for her to pick up the credit card. She had no social skills at all and from what I could see spent most of her night standing at the end of the bar chatting with other servers who were also doing nothing. This restaurant was always one of our favorites but since the move it isn't up to it's past standards. I really hope that the owners will properly train their current staff or it will go the way of other restaurants that have...
Read moreThis is a very small restaurant in Montrose and looks a little beat up from the road but we decided to give it a try. We are so glad we took the chance. We got there just before they opened and were the second couple to be seated. Within 30 minutes of sitting down the place was packed without any open tables. It seems that the local people of Montrose know that this is really good Italian food. All the food is cooked to order and it showed. We had the Rigatoni Al Arrabbiata, Rigatoni pasta, sautéed Italian sausage, garlic, crushed pepper, & marinara sauce. It was very good. The pasta was cooked perfectly, the sauce had good flavor and was light. The Italian sausage was really good too but it did have a little bit of a spicy note so keep that in mind. We also had the Spaghetti Alla Sofia, spaghetti pasta, sautéed shrimp, fresh chopped tomatoes, basil, & garlic white wine sauce. Again, the pasta was cooked perfectly. The sauce was flavorful and light and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. For dessert we had the cheesecake with a homemade berry sauce and homemade Tiramisu. Both were good but the Tiramisu really took the prize. It was light and airy with excellent flavor. Probably the best Tiramisu we have ever had. In addition to the great food we also found the service to be quick and the staff was excellent and very attentive. Overall a...
