Making my way home from south of Indy...happened to just stop here.
It's family style, snd how the waitress explained is.....which means you order your steak, chicken, scallops.. and the sides are brought in bigger shareable dishes, corn, potatoes, and gravy.. ice cream with a wafer comes with it. Salad and soup were also a part of this meal.
Upon walking up to the place, I didn't notice the actual entrance and tried opening a door that was locked.. turn right and use that door. Maybe it was because people were taking pictures on the large wooden rocking horses that distracted me. It wasn't clear...what was the entrance, regardless.
After walking in the far right door...a young girl is at a desk... I thought I was in a business office or possibly still went in the wrong door. It was early..7ish...
She had to check on a table. We get seated in what looked to be a patio but indoors. The servers were wearing what looked like sexy Halloween costumes.. our waitress had a neon colored string in the front of hers, and another waitress had a kind of ripped black outfit. Maybe they were supposed to be maid outfits? I'm not sure.
50 bucks to share 3 pieces of chicken and a steak...because we didn't know what we were getting into... So go hungry... if you share a meal, they make you buy a vegetable plate for the other person.. even though you probably would have already gotten the same amount of vegetables to have shared.
More people equal bigger sides... not my thing. So many questions.. but I will not probably go back unless I had a big group of people to feed. The chicken clearly had been cooked a while ago. I ate one piece. It was fine. The steak looked good, but my friend ate that. A chicken leg and another piece of chicken were left. Ice cream comes with a meal, and it's topped with a wafer. I gladly ordered chocolate. And was surprised they offered peppermint.
The other tsbles cleared out, and I never saw anyone besides 4 girls who seemed to be running the place.
On our way out, a police officer was picking up food...two girls were now at the front desk...one got up and handed us little bags of kettle corn... I guess since the name was Copper Kettle.
On the way to the door... I noticed a small room for coats... and some copper tea kettles. I walked by several different rooms and would rather have sat in a more private area than beside two parties of 8 or more.. and in the direct path from the kitchen and all the people walking by to go to the bathroom and to leave...
Was told we could visit the garden..
I couldn't find the front door... I wasn't going to be walking around looking for a garden...
I would be interested to see this place in the daylight.
It was a Saturday night.
Maybe it's because I don't like to share my food..spoons...etc.
I get the idea.. it's really like a group place, not so much for two lost people just trying a place to eat.
I took the remaining chicken home to feed to outside animals.
The waitress did a good job.. brought a paper bag for the chicken and Styrofoam for the sides. But no bag to put that in. It's all good.
But my concern was.. juice or the top popping open.
Nothing was bad. It was just a different. Didn't seam managed by anyone, and if you hadn't been there, it didn't make sense to me why two people would not just share one meal.
I'd be interested to see what the same meal togo looked like... and how does that work.
Sorry for all the ramblings..
I would opt for a regular restaurant..not family style over this just because I don't understand how you don't feel ripped off. Tableside buffet is how I would describe this place. Kind of like taking a cruise with someone who bought the drink package and you had to buy the drink package even though you don't drink. Hahaha
Anyway.. good times in small towns across the Midwest.
Sorry...
Read moreI hate bad reviews. Owners of businesses put their heart and souls into their businesses, but it feels like these owners are riding on the past and have sort of given up.
We did not have reservations, but we were early (5pm) and arrived to an empty parking lot. The staff made us feel like we were an interruption We almost left just left, but had read so many good things that we wanted to try it. I expected to be seated in a busy room, but instead there were a handful parties there...4 or 5 top. My experience tells me we would be gone well before they got busy....and we were.
The chicken, what should have been the star of the show, was at least acceptable but by no means noteworthy when you compared to the "Chicken Triangle" restaurants like Wagners in Oldenburg, Stones in Milhouse, or any of a dozen taverns and restaurants. What was served was not crisp, nor particularly flavorful.
The whipped potatoes were gummy, the gravy was like lumpy wallpaper paste, the Chicken soup and sweet corn tasted like Campbells and Libby's. The greenbeans were sweetened with something -- maple or brown sugar perhaps? Nothing tasted like it was made their, only released from a #10 can from a restaurant superstore.
Back to the chicken --- for 2 people in a party I would expect 2 breasts, 2 thighs, 2 legs, 2 wings. What arrived was 1 breast and a mishmash of the rest.
As for value -- at $25 per person...I expected a LOT better.
On a positive note....and this is really strange....
The atmosphere was straight of of 1980's. I felt a wave of nostalgia, as we eased through the meal listening to hits from Kenny G, Spiro Gyra, and may be Dave Grusin surrounded by crystal lighting scones, and floral murals, with white painted wrought iron porch columns.
Its clear the best years of this place are behind it --- and I sincerely hope the owners refresh and bring this out of the Kitchen Nightmare episode :( I REALLY wanted to like it. ...
Read moreKopper Kettle Inn - I'm still mad about our Christmas Eve dinner and feel totally cheated. They have a beautiful facility and their decorations are wonderful...BUT...our service people were rude, argumentative, and we couldn't get the owner to meet us at our table. First, their holiday menu was priced about 50% higher than their daily menu for the same dinners - only less choices. Second, we just got our salad on the table, and here comes the entire dinner. I complained that this was too fast, there was no room on the table for their large bowls, and frankly we felt rushed. They were pushing us out of the restaurant. The servers totally ignored our concerns, and kept pushing bowls on every square inch of the table...I had my elbow in the salad bowl! Third, serving "family style" seems quaint...but by the time we divided and passed the food bowls around the table, the food was cold...and we had no time to start with our salads. Then, the bill came...aside from the aforementioned 50% increase, they added a 20% mandatory tip. I would not have had any problem with this except our service and their managers were miserable and rude. Also it would have been nice had they informed us of this charge...it was no longer a gratuity, but an undeserved service charge. Lastly when she slapped the bill down, she advised that they charge a 3 1/2% surcharge for credit cards. Why am I paying their Visa charge when they aren't paying for mine? Why don't they just charge me for their electric bill too? It is proven that charge cards equate to more customers and usually higher purchases. This is their cost of doing business that increases their sales. None of this was mentioned before hand on any menu or sign, and that is the problem for me. I'm not accusing, but I have also heard that some companies that "bully" into using cash might not be reporting everything for taxes...I don't know. This place is a blight on the Indy...
