My family and I, 2 young boys and my wife, decided to try the brunch after reading about the "homemade sausage gravy", and the "amazing bread pudding" on their facebook, and seeing the reviews, we thought to ourselves "We better try this place before they close for the winter."
My youngest was free. The other boy was 15$, half price. And my wife and I were 30$ each, for a grand total of 75$. Kinda pricey, I thought to myself. "I hope it's worth it" I mutter to my brain.
So, atmosphere was a buffet laid out on a bar. 5-7 tables in the back corner was the seating. It's probably a good thing that I was not impressed because if they actually had amazing food, they would need more seating. Just laying that fact out there.
As I went down the line of stainless steel chafing dishes, some items beckoned for attention, as others failed. We must have arrived after a large group because most dishes were down to about a 1/4 left of each. I tried the bacon, the eggs, the "homemade" sausage gravy on a biscuit, the home fries, the pancakes, and cinnamon buns as far as the breakfast side goes. The bacon was amazing, as most bacon is. The eggs were well cooked and good for being on a buffet. Biscuits and gravy is my specialty, been cooking it forever, taught by my grandma. Your sausage gravy is not up to par, and that's about the nicest I can be about it(I thought I was eating flour paste). The home fries were not cooked all the way through. They were hard raw potato in the middle(maybe do some research on potatoes and which ones are good for which application). yuck. My child did like the pancakes and said those were killer.....kinda hard to mess up a pancake. The bread pudding was so rich and sweet, I felt like I was just eating sugar. Another disappointment.
I thought you guys could redeem yourselves through the "Lunch" side. I do love me some smoked meats. The pulled pork was good, but if you serve pulled pork to a southerner, and your cole slaw is crap....well, why? You really need to work on that coleslaw recipe.....sugar into vinegar, then mix with mayo....It's really simple.....That was the worst cole slaw I've ever had next to the Stockhouse in Westbrook. The Brisket was dry and tasted burnt. Whatever you are smoking with is not doing your meat justice. And you only have one BBQ Sauce? And not even labeled. I Thought it was ketchup. You guys are a BBQ place right? You only have the one BBQ sauce? No mustard based one, or even house mustard, or a white BBQ, or a spicy BBQ? Just the one.....ok.
I almost felt so bad I was going to offer to work Sundays 6-2 by myself just to prove a point....... But then I heard the lady talking about staying open through the winter and surviving on the buffet, and I thought to myself, "I want to see what happens next"......You seriously need to up your game if that's your...
Read moreOrdered takeout. Prices were very reasonable and ordered the "whole joint" with 2 cornbreads which was more than enough food for my wife, my 2 year old and myself. The highlights were the cornbread and the beans. Probably some of the best beans I have ever had. Definitely nailed it. The smoked meat itself was good but nothing I would go crazy over. I will say it was one of the most tender Bbq I've had and it was very juicy. The flavor could use an amplifier in my book. It seems like most things have the same black pepper style rub on it (including the Mac and cheese which is an interesting choice). It comes unsauced and the small thing of BBQ sauce it comes with is vinegar based. I was good I just prefer the sweet/ mustard style and much more. It still is a great addition to the area and with a few tweaks it could be some...
Read moreWe decided to try Wicked J's for dinner. After reading reviews we had high hopes. We called and ordered takeout, which upon entering were glad we did. The restaurant is half finished I'm appearance. The bar is empty, only drinks are in a small reach in fridge by the front door. Not the best atmosphere but it's about the food. We ordered a smash burger and a pulled pork sandwich. Both with Mac n chz and also a side of beans. The pulled pork didn't have much flavor, the BBQ sauce is watery with a mostly vinegar taste. The Mac n chz was decent but tastes more like it has pepperjack or something along those lines. Not what is expected. The beans had an overly sweet taste to them. The lettuce on the burger was wilted. Over all very unimpressed with the food quality. Would...
