This review is based on two experiences, lunch and dinner while on vacation and visiting the beach just a few steps away.
Lunch: we have had a handicapped individual with us who was physically unable to go to the restaurant so we wanted to pick up food from the take out section to bring back to the beach. They were unable to eat fried food which is 99% of the takeout sections menu so we called to order the baked fish sandwich from the restaurant to get to-go. First we were told that they could not make an order to go from the restaurant while the outside take-out section was open. I went into the restaurant to ask the hostess if they were serious about this nonsense rule and was again told they wouldn’t until I asked if they were seriously going to refuse an order for a handicapped person who could not physically come into the restaurant. Finally someone talked to a manager and we were told we can place that order to go.
While waiting I was told that the rule was in place because of how busy they get inside (meanwhile there were only 7 tables of customers inside). After a 30 min wait we got the food and went back to the beach only to realize that they put a fried fish rather than the baked (you can just order the fried fish from the takeout section). I was convinced that this was done out of spite in the kitchen.
We then went back to the restaurant and told them the order was wrong and I expressed that I did not want to wait another 30 min and asked for it to be expedited. A manager came and apologized - also wanted to give me a card for something free to have between November and March. I honestly thought it was a joke at first - then I nicely explained that I’m here on vacation and def not coming back after the summer. After another 25 min wait we finally got our food.
55 min in total plus the time it took to get to and from the beach and the aggravation of trying to explain that we physically couldn’t a handicapped party to the actual restaurant- NOT WORTH THE HEADACHE AND TIME!
Dinner: tried to give this place a second chance for dinner a few days later. Everything was fine and our waitress was very nice until it came time to get our food. We ordered oysters as appetizers and a soup. Then we ordered meals which included lobster, clams, pasta, soup and salad.
The appetizers came out 1.5 min before the entrees (how does the raw bar take the same time to come out as a whole fish grilled). HOWEVER, the entrees all came out except the soup and salad. Which took 8 more min then everything else and about 10 more minutes then when the clam cakes came out.
We thought it was just a random mistake and our food was just not timed properly until we realized two other tables next to us had the same problem. Appetizers came out and a min later were followed by entrees with the waitress yanking the appetizers out of the way. Convinced this is done on purpose to turn tables.
Food: the oysters were shucked so bad that you had to spend a few minutes getting shells out of your mouth after each one. The “blackened shrimp” on the salad looked like it had the blackening seasonings put on after already being boiled/cooked. Lobster roll is weak and not worth the price. We ordered the whole fish and it came with melted plastic lure inside of it not just one time but twice after a new one was requested. The manager was nice and came out but after the second one it was clear whoever was cleaning or prepping the fish just wasn’t paying attention.
There are no runners or bussers (our table was not taken care of and plates were not taken until the very end). Everything is done by the waitress who is overwhelmed and over worked.
Don’t waist your money here. Go to Iggys or Monaghan’s and eat 10x better at a shack. Or go to Matunuck and eat like a king for the...
Read moreI’ve been coming to George’s of Galilee for most of my life, and it has never been anything short of excellent. Known best for their iconic Rhode Island Clam Chowder, George’s consistently serves fresh, flavorful dishes in a setting that feels like home—welcoming, relaxed, and steeped in coastal charm.
I recently had a delicious lunch at George’s with my sister who was in from out of town. This is her favorite place to go whenever she’s in town. We both tried the New England Clam Chowder—a newer addition to the menu and a delicious one I might add. Creamy and seasoned perfectly…it is just as satisfying as the classic Rhode Island clear broth chowder that George’s is famous for. It is great to now have a choice between two exceptional chowders that each highlight local flavor in their own way.
We then shared an order of their famous stuffies, which were seasoned and packed with flavor. As we dined…we enjoyed signature cocktails while taking in the stunning waterfront views that make every table feel like the best seat in the house. It was one of those perfect afternoons that reminded me why George’s remains a cherished favorite.
George’s of Galilee is more than just a great meal…it’s part of Rhode Island’s illustrious history. Located in the historic fishing village of Galilee in Narragansett, Rhode Island. George’s began in 1948 as a humble coffee spot for local fishermen. Over the decades, it has grown into a vibrant, multi-level restaurant known for its boat-to-plate seafood and breathtaking views of Block Island Sound.
The roots go even deeper. George’s of Galilee’s legacy dates back to 1660, when Thomas Durfee arrived in Portsmouth from England. After earning his freedom, Durfee became an innkeeper and formed an unlikely friendship with Wamsutta, brother of King Philip. In their exchange of recipes…Durfee’s English chowder and Wamsutta’s introduction to native quahogs, a coastal culinary tradition was born. That tradition lives on in George’s signature dish: Rhode Island Clam Chowder, a light, briny, ten-generation family recipe.
Today, George’s offers something for everyone: six distinct dining areas, a seasonal sushi menu, lobster specials, hand-cut steaks, and beloved local favorites like clam cakes, stuffies, and classic Rhode Island coffee milk.
You can dine indoors, outside, or grab something from the takeout window—all while soaking up unmatched views of the water. And in the summer, their private beach, tiki bar, and live entertainment make it a true destination.
For history, hospitality, and some of the freshest seafood in New England, George’s of Galilee is more than a meal it’s a tradition. And one I...
Read moreWe stopped at George's today. We checked in at the desk, gave my cell number and was told there would be a 30 monute wait.At 1:58 pm I got a text that our table was ready. Just a 10 minute wait. Our waitress Jordyn came to our table, introduced herself and asked if we would like something to drink. My wife ordered a decaf coffee with milk, not cream and I asked for a seltzer with lemon. Both drinks came quickly. Jordyn asked if we would like any appetizers, we ordered RI clam chowder and fried calamari. I requested the calamari served plain with a side of tartar. I told Jordyn I have a shellfish allergy and also an allergy to spinach, eggplant and asparagus. She was concerned about the calamari however I assured her it would be ok if fried in the same oil as shrimp, etc. We give our dinner orders at the same time. Bourbon salmon for my wife, stuffed flounder for me. She came with the calamari, covered with what looked to be an aoli of some type and a side of cocktail sauce....no tartar. We waited several minutes for her to come with the chowder. When she served the chowder, I informed her of the issue with the calamari. She offered to have it re made but I told her no, just please take it off the bill. Then we proceeded to wait for our meals. While waiting we heard another waitress informing her customers of the days specials, we were never offered any specials. When our meals finally arrived.....an hour and 10 minutes later, the brocollini and lemon risotto was cold on both plates. Jordyn offered new brocollini, but it never came. We ate it cold. The manager came by to see what was going on, he apologized, said they got slammed today. My wife pointed out that 2 other tables near us.....served by a different waitress, had ordered, been served and left before we got our meals. He apologized again and said he would see what he could do about the check. My wife said, we are not looking gir a discount, we just wanted to eat. Jordyn finally came with the check about 15 or so minutes later and said the manager gave us a discount. Again no offer to refill coffee or ask about desserts. I left $42,00 cash as the check was $41.90. For the first time in my life I never left a tip and that was only because I didn't want to interact with Jordyn any longer. As we were leaving I asked for the manager. We spoke, I thanked him for the discount and explained everything that Jordyn did, or in this case, didn't do. He told me he knew she was an issue and that he would be dealing with her. We shook hands and my wife and I left...
