Our Place Restaurant & Tavern — Restaurant in New Hanover Township

We have been to Our Place many times over the past 5 years. The visits prior to 2018 were great until our last two visits. This year, the service and food have declined exponentially. Our most recent visit was an absolute disgrace! We called in advance to get a table. We arrived and gave our name to the hostess. We ordered a drink at the bar in the interim, only to be harassed by a local older patron that wanted to insight a fight over our bar stool being too close to his chair and breathing area. This was extremely unsettling and we ignored him and moved to another area. We were seated by the hostess moments later. We waited for our server for about 15 minutes and endured the cleaning of the tables as they were turned around. Let me preface “endured cleaning,” meaning they were spraying multi-purpose cleaner airborne that you tasted, smelled and ingested. This happed during our last visit in January as well. It is strong and will turn your stomach. The server finally arrived and my husband and I ordered drinks. Our young server advised she couldn’t take our dinner selections just yet, but advised she would place the drink order. Another 15 minutes passed and we received our drinks and placed the order for wings, pierogies and dinner. About 40 minutes later the soup, pierogies and bucket of wings arrived. The steak and potato soup was delicious; the other items subpar, and the wings were ice cold on the ends and needed a desperate reheat. We couldn’t decipher if the server waited too long to pick up our wings in the kitchen or if they were just not cooked thoroughly. The server did not provide any appetizer plates or extra napkins until we were able to track her down and inquire. She threw 2 tiny 4” styrofoam plates in front of my husband and walked away. How could we slice an appetizer with a knife on a styrofoam plate, when everyone else was given a real plate? We didn’t say anything as this visit was on a downward spiral. My husband ordered his last beer and again, an eternity to receive. All the while, fantastik spray cleaner or something similar, is getting sprayed everywhere to clean tables. I was sick to my stomach and just wanted to get the heck out of dodge. We will...

So friends have been telling me about this place for years, always talking about how great the food is. You know what? For the most part they're right.

I'll start with the 3 things that took away the one star to cause a 4 star rating. 1. Lighting, the bar area is brightly lit but unfortunately the dining area isn't. A little brighter lighting would really make the atmosphere more enjoyable especially when it comes to seeing your table clearly. 2. Their Pickles were mushy, don't know about anyone else but crisp fresh pickles that crunch or snap when you eat them are a must, no exceptions. 3. No "Original" or mild buffalo sauce.

Ok so now for the reasons they got 4 stars. 1. Service, the wait staff were friendly, helpful and got food and drinks out to the table quickly. There wasn't any time spent wondering where our orders were. Definitely worthy of a 20%+ gratuity. 2. The food, I had their California Cheesburger and it was delicious. I've had this kind of burger at a couple other places and I have to say this one is the best (in spite of the mushy pickle). The burger was cooked to perfection, it was tasty, not lumpy (no odd pieces of meat in the burger to make you wonder if it's mystery meat), the lettuce and tomatoes were crisp and fresh. My mother had their cheesesteak and her comment to me was that it's better than the one we have at our favorite restaurant. So that pretty much puts their cheesesteak at the top of her list. 3. Their fries, had a crunch to them that crisp fries should always have (I keep coming back to that word crisp don't I?). I'll definitely be having that meal again. 4. WING NIGHT, they dropped a bucket of wings on our table and even though they didn't have a mild or "Original " buffalo sauce their recommendation of their Bee Stinger sauce as a mild sauce was definitely on point and absolutely delicious. A large quantity of delicious, meaty wings at a great price can't argue with that.

So there you have it. This is definitely a restaurant I'll be visiting again and I'll be trying a few other things...

My girlfriends love Our Place and chose it for lunch after Bible study. I admit all their cheesesteaks were huge. I ordered the salad because it said it was mixed greens. It was not. It was a bag of iceberg lettuce with the cabbage and carrots in it. Next time I'll have to remember to ask what kind of lettuce they have. Maybe they were out of mixed greens that day because there was nothing green and leafy in my salad. 8-4-21 We came after Bible study again and this time I ordered a greens salad with romaine lettuce and salmon added. They still included all the toppings like carrots, cheese, etc. Salmon was amazing. One of the girls got the Our Place special which is roast beef and cheese on rye and it was huge and really good. The burgers and chicken BLT sandwiches were also very good. And they had no problem substituting grilled chicken for the fried chicken strips on the salad.
