UPDATE! Wow! Paul smokes some meat!!! What a treat we had on Sunday! We stopped in again to get pies for our folks visiting from the Midwest and instead Paul and crew did an on the spot, to-go catering order for 5( while cooking for a half full kitchen with the after church crowd on their way. Our lunch for 5 was delicious smoked pork sandwiches, killer bbq sauce with a hint of heat and of course incredible pies! Your flexibility and stupendous food was appreciated and devoured! Star and all greet you like family as you may sit at long table shared with hikers of the CDT, or long time ranchers and neighbors. The Gatherin Place II is an absolute must stop and eat or take a Pie to go!
Original review- The Gathering Place II in Pie Town, is the essence of this beautiful part of NM. Teresa was baking pies when we arrived and greeted us with a big welcoming smile and by the time breakfast was done, warm pies were ready for purchase. Breakfast was huge fluffy pancakes, just perfectly made. Crispy bacon and 2 eggs rounded out a great meal and better company. Star was a delight for service and a good story. Tyana works food magic in the kitchen! The Breakfast burrito at small was as big as my head, filled with eggs, potatoes and of course green chile, meat optional. The lunch menu gave me many reasons to hope another visit is in the future. PIES- What everyone want to know are perfect! So many fruit flavors and chocolate varieties that change all the time. Today had chocolate cherry, dark cherry, tart cherry (my choice), turtle, NM apple, apple, strawberry, strawberry rhubarb (my other purchase) and so many more! Visit the friendly Gathering Place at the top of the hill, under the tower of Pie Town for a coffee, Pie lunch or breakfast. Hours and Pie availability vary. Thank you all for...
Read moreA very PLEASANT SURPRISE. This place feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere, much less a place where you’d find great service but I found it here!
My husband and I are truckers and stopped here as it was a place he had been as a through-hiker on the CDT a couple years back. He said the pies are delicious! Though I wasn’t quite hungry yet nor in the mood for pie, I still agreed and was sure glad I did!
The staff was amazingly friendly. Helped navigate the menu by describing how everything was made. Ex: “Pastrami & Pork sandwiches are smoked in house.” Pastrami for me please! I could smell the smoked flavor even before my first bite and it was all delicious. Homemade onion rings. YUM.
Then, the Pies! Hubby had the Coconut Buttermilk & I wanted a fruity option so I enjoyed the Raspberry Mango. Fresh (still warm) & delish! I later learned that the New Mexico Apple pie has Apples, Green Chilis & a native nut similar to a pine nut called “piñon?”. Unique and I’ll hope to try it next time.
Had a chance to chat with the owner, who is also the chef here. He was nice to talk with and shared much of his experience… he also said they run through pies like crazy which is amazing because you KNOW they’re always fresh.
Oh! And A’La Mode is an option, too! 🍨

Read moreI stopped here passing thru to use the bathroom and was considering getting a meal. On the way thru the diner (where a bunch of locals stared at me like I had 3 heads lol) I saw the worst looking dishes, like burritos with raw flour tortillas that hadn't even been warmed on the grill, and some other terrible looking dishes. When I used the bathroom I could see right into the kitchen and there were like 4 electric roaster ovens, a couple of crock pots, a toaster oven, etc. Seems they cook all their food in/on anything but an oven or grill/flattop. Left immediately and waited until I got to Show Low. Maybe its changed hands as this was 1.5 years ago. But God it looked absolutely terrible when I was there. And the prices were very high for NM. IMO the only thing this place is good for is taking a leak while you're passing thru. Sad because I wanted to try it, but the weird silent vibe from the locals that stared at me, the high prices, and the terrible looking food cooked in $50 electric roaster ovens made it a no-go for sure. Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibes in the dining room. Geandma-ish to...
