Wow! I've lived here for almost 4 years and love to resturant around with the wife. This is that hidden gem and local old time place that all the locals go to for their homemade, delicious food. My Gosh! It's the best for comfort food made fresh and made right. Taste on everything was sooooo good! The wife tried the baked steak with creamy, homemade mashed potatoes and pinto beans that are made correctly with the right flavorings. I wanted the double stuffed cabbages, but they were down to only one, so I had the baked chicken over dressing (stuffing). The owner came out and gave us the last stuffed cabbage to eat as an appetizer and apologized. Oh my gosh!! It was soooooo good. Did I mention the fresh made soft, sweet, doughy dinners rolls and butter? I can't wait to go back and try the meal. Both our meals were just like grandma would make and couldn't have been better. During the meal, we were gifted with a deep-fried dressing patty to try. Sounds kinda funky, but it was so succulent! Again, it tasted like grandma's old-time recipe. We noticed the plate of spaghetti that the next table was eating. It was gigantic, and they ended up bringing some home. The wife wanted to try a homemade dessert but was too full. I ended up bringing home some of my dinner. It was just as good the next day. Prices were good for what you get here.....not too expensive, and not cheap. BTW: we waited only minutes to be seated when we got here. You can see that I've done well over 500 reviews and posted 4000 pictures and short videos. I have over 24,000,000 views, and I'm one of the very top restaurant reviewers for Google maps/Mapquest. This restaurant just became our favorite local American comfort food place to go. I'm sure this will be a regular go-to restaurant for us. I apologize for being verbose with this review, but this restaurant has been around for 65 years in the Diehl family, and you've got to try it!! I'm sure that you'll agree on how good it is. EZ ON / EZ OFF: If you're traveling on Rt 64, exit off the Nitro exit 45 or Exit 50 for Institute. Punch it into your GPS.... So easy to find. And, it's worth the mile or two to enjoy a meal here. I'll bet dollars to donuts that you'll make it a regular stop on...
Read moreI think they have really good food, but I was pretty disappointed when they charged me for extra bread, most restaurants these days will let you eat all the bread that you want, and most of the time it’s hidden in the cost of the food so that way you don’t know you’ve paid for it. I will add to my disappointment, Oct 3rd, again the food is good but the service is not, when you go to a restaurant that serves home cooked food compared to a restaurant chain you would expect the service be 10 times better since its a family owned business, but our last 2 visits we ask what we want to drink that's normal, we placed our order got our food and I asked for some extra condiments but never seen the waiter/waitress again until they brought the check, perhaps they thought we were Camels and did not need any refills or the extra condiment I ask for, I probably will go back more than likely, but to give the owner some good advice, you need to train your staff to be more attentive to their guest, after all we are guests in your house and we should be treated like just like family. I'm a generous tipper if the service is right, but if not then you get...
Read moreI'm sure the food is probably good BUT my wife and I left before we even had a chance to order. Why you might ask? Lack of any form of service or caring by the entire staff.
We waited to be seated very patiently close to 15 minutes with no one in front of us and the lobby completely empty. Several members of the waitstaff looked us dead in the eyes numerous times, but wouldn't even acknowledge our presence, let alone seat us or let us know that someone would be with us shortly. Finally we were seated by a gentleman who did apologize for our wait, but it honestly felt half hearted. Once we were seated, we once again were completely ignored by the entire staff, this time for 15 to 20 minutes and once again with numerous members of the waitstaff making eye contact with us and walking right past us with ZERO care for our wellbeing. No one spoke to us at all, other than the gentleman who seated us. It was at that point that my wife and i decided to get up and leave, again with no one saying a word to us. Back in the 90s when I lived in St. Albans, I ate here numerous times, with no issues. What a difference 25 years...
