So after all the hype, and seeing the prices, I was a bit disappointed in the experience. I'll rate it as I experienced it. First, the atmosphere. Made in a 100+ yr old building, and with much memorabilia on the walls, the ambiance and atmosphere was awesome. 5/5 in my opinion. Next was the service. We were seated immediately, and served well. Not like the videos where they are warm and seem to actually care, but more in a professional, efficient kind of way. Polite, always available. 4.5/5 Very good. Then the food. I ordered the chicken fried steak, green beans and mashed potatoes and gravy. It looked good. Now, this is where I became disappointed. There is such a hype about these steaks. But... they were paper thin! Literally, at places, it was breading to breading. The breading was very good and crispy, but I hardly got the flavor of the meat at all!. To be sure, the size was huge, taking up one half of the plate, but that was after they obviously beat the regular sized steak into a ribbon, and then quadruple coated it in batter that was twice as thick as the steak. The green beans and mashed potatoes were straight out of the institutionalized containers. No taste, no flavor except for the gravy, which was average cream gravy. My son finished my potatoes and ate my biscuit, which he says was good and fluffy. The obligatory cinnamon roll was hard to chew. Almost crunchy. Probably having been made much earlier and sat all day under the warmer. The flavor was good, but too sweet for me. I wonder if they had a sugar free option for diabetics since it automatically comes with the meal. All in all, the food was a 2/5 for me. After we ate, we looked at the museum, which is a display of women of music from Oklahoma. It was okay. Didn't have great lighting, and some of the displays were hard to see. And I'm pretty sure I looked at the entire thing, and couldn't find the most famous female singers. Like Reba. Maybe they have to wait until they are deceased or retired before they are displayed. If so, it would have been nice to have known that. I would rate it a 3/5. So I give the entire experience a generous 3. I'm really disappointed. It isn't worth the trip from OKC, so y'all from other parts of the country/ world, don't rush. If you happen to be going through, you should probably go, just to say you did, but don't hurry. It isn't that...
Read moreThis may be the best chicken fried steak I have ever had the pleasure to eat. Beyond that, the entire experience was very enjoyable. Our server was prompt, checked on us several times, and always filled our drinks when we were at half. We wanted to try several of their most popular items, and I have to say, they did not disappoint. For starters: The chicken fried steak is a thinner steak, with a corn flake style crust. This allows the crust to stay crisp and keep the meat moist. The white gravy has a stronger pepper flavor that balances the salt and flavor of the fried steak. The green beans are flavorful and tender with chunks of bacon that have great flavor. The loaded baked potato is tender. The side salads were phenomenal, with crisp Lettuce, fresh ingredients with their croutons being my favorite topper. They are crisp but tender. In the end, we got a cinnamon roll 1 side and 1 center, and they were so good we had to get a whole order of them on the way out. The food experience was top notch, and I would highly recommend anyone nearby or passing through to stop by!
Of course, with every restaurant, there are critiques, and truly, my only issues were with the seats. Many of the booth seats are quite warn with ours and have large area rips, which can be uncomfortable. We also noted that the seating is limited, and in some busy times, this may cause extensive waiting times, and Kendalls does not accept credit or debit cards. They do offer an ATM for convenience with a 2.50 charge, so it's worth noting that bringing cash would be more frugal. That's it, though. We appreciated the atmosphere, the people that worked here, all the smiling faces and decor on the walls that not only are a time capsul but also feel like home. We were able to meet the owner and business partner who work side by side with their staff, which was very reaffirming that this family owned business isn't just proud of their food, but stand by their business principles.
Some other notable foods Kendalls are known for are their Okra, Chicken Tenders, fried catfish, and freshly made cinnamon rolls that they sell at the front! Note: this is home to the "Kendalls chicken fried challenge" and not for the faint of heart. But for entering you will at least earn yourself a cup, if you win? You earn a T shirt and added to the few that have been able to complete such...
Read moreTried Kendall's for the first time this past Saturday around 3 in the afternoon, it wasn't busy so no wait. They put us in a room way back in the back with no one else at the other tables. We saw our waitress 4 times: Took drink order, brought drinks and took our food order, brought food, brought the check. Never did she come check on us, and being stuck in back room there was no way to get her attention if we needed refills, etc. Got the chicken fried steak it tasted ok but I've definitely had much better and the meat patty was very thin which I've since noticed is a common thread in the reviews. Mashed potatoes and green beans were good. The biscuit was very good and the cinnamon roll was a disappointment. We we went up front to pay we discovered cash or check only, but wait they do have an ATM machine up front. The ATM machine got the tip. The thing that really spawned this review is that in front of me 2 ladies were paying and one of them made a comment to her friend that their cinnamon rolls to go were expensive and really not that good. At that point some older woman who is no doubt the owner or manager spouted off to her "then don't buy them". I don't understand talking to a paying customer like that for simply stating an opinion. I mean they have a "hate is not tolerated" sign in the restaurant but that woman was pretty hateful to her customer. I won't be going back, the food isn't all that good, the service kind of sucked, the cash only is out of touch in 2024, and the vibe of the...
