DuPont Canteen — Restaurant in North Carolina

Where to start????

We recently spent a long weekend in the area and had the opportunity to visit Dupont Canteen a few times. Our first visit, we had their famous Spanish Hot Dog. The Spanish sauce has a wonderful, unique taste that compares to no other hot dog topping. I also had a little cheese and onions to make a wonderful meal. Of coarse, a meal isn't complete without dessert and this was the place!!! They have 16 flavors REAL ice cream...not fake soft serve..... I had both a bowl of Butter Pecan ice cream and a strawberry malt. Both were outstanding.

I have to mention the straw. Have you ever had a shake or malt and you can't drink it because the narrow, wimpy straw collapses? They use a hefty, wide straw that allows for continuous drinkability from start to finish. This is just one of the details that makes this place stand out above all others.

Tom and Jodi are the owners and are such nice people. While waiting for my bowl, I overheard Tom tell an employee "Put more ice cream in there. Always error on side of overserving." This impressed both myself and my wife so much, we returned the following day.

I normally don’t leave reviews let alone all 5 stars, but this one was worth it to me. Me and my friends went to spend the afternoon at DuPont and stopped to get a snack here at the Canteen. The internet was out and they could only take cash. There was a family in front of me that didn’t have cash. With a sad little girl who just wanted some ice cream - the staff was so kind not to deny the family anything they wanted. Not only did they go above and beyond for that family, they served me and my friends going out of their way to serve us. Normally you go up to get your food from a window, instead they personally came out and served us. Not only was I impressed by the simple snacks they made but the hospitality that was shown. We stopped in on our last night of vacation after a day of mountain biking. The employee was so sweet, even when my husband made a joke about my indecisiveness, he reminded him that it was ok for women to take their time. When I finally decided on the peanut butter pie ice cream, he offered to give me a sample of their raspberry sorbet to try with it- to make a frozen pb&j flavor. It was SO good! I always appreciate great customer service and he excelled, and you could tell he honestly enjoyed the work he was doing.
