I have a confession. I've never much liked polish sausage. Most of my heritage is polish (the other half offered no family traditions/recipes). I came for the pierogo and galumpki. I inadvertently ordered the wrong platter because I wasn't paying attention. Whoops! It was a happy accident because their polish made me a convert! It was simply fantastic. No greasy gristle. Well smoked and huge portions along side kraut and two very large galumbki. I made three meals of this meals when I took my leftovers home. We tried the fried mushrooms👍and the home made potato chips and holy heck! Those were 🔥 FIRE 🔥. Huge portion, there were five of us and we all had plenty of chips to share, they offer two cheese dips with them and they come with a seasoned salt on them. They are crispy and YUM! We tried the potato pancakes and they are about as big as a salad plate, are you sensing a trend? BIG Frank isn't kidding! We had a BIG sandwich which is made with real off the bone polish ham, not chopped up luncheon ham. Another of us chose a hot dog. Again, this is made the same great folks that craft that sausage and it's got a great "pop". We added fries and were nearly buried in them, but they were fantastic homemade with a bit of skin on the end and seasoned salt. So good! Although there is a full bar, we had two kids under 21, so KIDS ARE WELCOME in the family reserved area where we sat. At the end of the meal we tried the Polish custard pie. It is a hidden gem! It reminded us of a cream puff! Not overly sweet a really nice treat! We had three different servers pop in and out of table each of which was cheerful and helpful! They were busy but answered my parents questions with patience...
Read moreMy Mom & I visited BFS's first location shortly after it opened, years ago. We left with ethnic pantry items from the shelves, fresh rye breads, & pounds of what I could only describe as "the same sausage served at the gazillion of Polish/Hungarian wedding receptions" that I had attended to date. (Without missing a beat, owner Stan had gloved his hand with a square of wax paper, reached into the display case, & stood tall with a few links of what sounded like, "warol!•wskizisch" to me at that moment.) "Wedding sausage!" I declared, & I left with my Polski version of nirvana.
Stan moved into a bigger space since that opening, just down the street. He is still personable, forward-thinking, & REAL! He and BFS held strong against all that the pandemic threw his way. His much-larger establishment still radiates warmth & laughter; a newcomer is only a stranger until the first beer or hot sandwich is ordered. The food is honest and delicious, & the staff is upbeat & caring! With what's happening with national food prices & shortages, why not re-invent your family celebrations to include, in whole or part, delicacies from Big Frank's Sausage?!
Occasionally, I get a feeling about someone from just one interaction. I'm over-the-moon that Stan and BFS are the survivors that I knew they'd be, which I suppose is expected when someone LOVES his work & his customers/friends like Stan S....
Read moreNice neighborhood restaurant/bar atmosphere. Friendly staff. Only 4 other people were there at about 2pm. Waitress said they had a Friday Fish Fry today. So we ordered two lake perch dinners. Waited about 45 minutes to receive our orders. No one came to our table to inform us of the reason for the delay, while we were waiting. Got an apology afterwards. Everything looked fine when brought to the table. One order was just ok. The fish coating was fairly crispy and the fries where fairly crispy. Tartar sauce was good. Coleslaw was not good, Cucumbers were ok. However the second order was inedible. The fish coating was very oily and mushy as were the fries oily and mushy. That order obviously was cooked before the oil was hot, therefore it came out full of grease. The manager was informed; and to her credit took it back to the cook to show him/her. Manager gave us 2 desert complimentary kolaczki cookies. Unfortunately the filing was excellent, but the dough was not completely baked. The cook obviously could care less about what he/she was serving. And quality control is lacking. Bottom line, the cook doesn't know how to cook fish or bake kolaczki. Which makes me question what the quality of their Polish...
