Ono Steak and Shrimp - A Delightful Discovery in Oahu
My recent visit to Ono Steak and Shrimp in Oahu was an absolute delight. I ordered the furikake ono steak with garlic shrimp, it came with a wasabi mayo dripping, rice and Hawaiian Macaroni Salad while Erik, opted for the ono steak with mango salsa. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed by a cheerful young lady at the register who made the experience even better. She patiently answered all our questions and explained what furikake was—a Japanese seasoning made with seaweed, sesame seeds, salt, and pepper. Intrigued, I decided to give it a try, and now I can’t wait to incorporate this unique flavor into my cooking at home.
The meal itself was outstanding. The Hawaiian mac salad was hands down the best I’ve had, and Erik found himself craving it for the rest of the week. We decided to take our food to go and enjoyed it at a nearby beach, making the experience even more memorable.
For the quality of the meal, the prices were very reasonable. If you find yourself in the area, I highly recommend giving Ono Steak and Shrimp a try. Cute little yellow building off the road and you will miss it if you aren’t paying attention. It’s a gem that offers both great food and...
Read moreHad garlic shrimp a few times while I was in Hawai'i and Ono's was my third stop during my trip. I've always heard good recs from Ono's for shrimp so this place was on my list.
They have their own parking and it wasn't too hard to find (we were also on scooters so easy parking). Although it doesn't seem like they are providing indoor seating at the moment, oy outdoor. There's only 3-4 outdoor seats so it might be hard to find if you come with a bug group like we did.
I ordered their garlic shrimp dish and while I whole heartedly enjoyed the size of the shrimp (big and juicy meat), I thought the garlic flavor was lacking in comparison to other locations that I've tried. The 🧄 pieces and sauces were all there, but the flavor didn't seem like it seeped deep enough so I had to always pick at the garlic to make sure each shrimp got covered in order to get the savory garlic taste.
Also had to knock down a star because I just felt the cleanliness was a little sus. Didn't seem like the tables outside were wiped (we had to wipe with alcohol wipes ourselves) and we saw a cockroach when we ordered...
Read moreThis is my favorite place to eat on Oahu for lunch. Period. These are also, consequently, the very best fish tacos on the island and they are CONSISTENTLY good y’all. I’ve tried a lot on the menu (wow coconut shrimp ♥️), but I have to say my go to is this: fresh fish tacos with garlic fries. You can see from the video what it looks like, but let me also paint a picture. This is gosh caught THAT VERY DAY in the water just down the road. They cook this perfectly every single time and top it with pineapple coleslaw made in the restaurant WITH mango papaya salsa and some mystery creamy sauce that I could lick out of my container. This medley of flavors goes together to make the most perfect fish taco. Only caveat is this: if you like your fish tacos fried, this isn’t fried- but that’s how I like them. The fries? The fries y’all… freshly fried with just tons of minced garlic on top. Do not knock this until you try it. Do not sleep on this place, it is worth a drive even if you are across the island. It’s my absolute favorite and it’ll...
