Used to absolutely adore this cafe for a light lunch while catching up on emails, the pear salad used to be amazing. I recently returned after a few years and was disappointed to find the cute gift shop element has been removed and replaced with strange decor.
I ordered the pear salad and when it arrived we were reminded (at 2:35) that they’d be closing at 3; understandable but a bit unnecessary. The salad has really gone downhill - mixture of romaine and arugula with both Caesar dressing and balsamic? The bread used to be grilled and delicious and was instead under-toasted with half spread, half melted garlic butter. Precisely at 3 they reminded every table that they were closing.
They’ve also added somewhat intense signs saying no computers allowed, but they are allowed in a tent in the parking lot, as if using a laptop at a cafe is a punishment - weird.

The lunch menu had a number of great offerings but I choose my favorite selection, an avocado BLT, and was pleased by the generous portions of all four ingredients. The thick bread appeared to have been slathered with a tasty garlicky spread which set it off! My companions reported that they were equally pleased with their selections. The coffee isn't the best in Oakland, but it's serviceable. It seems to be pretty packed often, so don't be surprised to wait for a table to open up. As such, DO NOT expect to be able to park yourself and work on a computer inside here. There are large signs posted everywhere saying "No computers!!"
