If you are BBQ connoisseur such as myself. And really know what good "Q" is supposed to aste like and realize that not all of it tastes the same then you will definitely appreciate the twist that the Okmulgee restaurant puts on their BBQ. The pit master is an artist in his field of smoking meats to perfection. And he also oversees a bunch of the most down home friendliest folks you will ever meet. I was passing through Okmulgee about every two weeks taking my wife to a Dr of chiropractic in tulsa. We had came by the joint several times and smelled that wonderful aroma of a smoker slowly roasting some meat which made me really take notice. So one day on whim I stopped in and decided to have look over the menu and continue on to tulsa. It was my intention to stop back by on the back home as we have a two and a half hour drive from our house to tulsa. The Pitmaster was Thierry and I spoke with him as I was looking over the menu when he said hang on sit I will he right back. Upon his return he had a small pice of brisket a short rib and a small piece of sausage. Which he promptly offered me as a sample. It didn't take me log to decide I knew where I was having supper on my way back through! Folks let's just suffice it to say that I know my way around a smoker pretty well myself as I have a large smoker mys3lf and have catered some events myself and have gotten some rave reviews on my own BBQ. But I am here today to tell you that I would not in no way even be worthy of lighting the wood in this Pitmaster's smoker. I have since ate at one other Capps BBQ joint in the area and I can tell you that it failed miserably in comparison to the one in Okmulgee. That feller knows how it's done. And they need to let him teach the others how to do it as well. Now if I hadn't already ate at the one in Okmulgee 1st I would have raved about the BBQ THERE AS WELL. because it was delicious as well. But delicious can be taken several steps above that and become gold plated delicious. And that's the Okmulgee version of Capps BBQ. no doubt about it I have ate BBQ all over Oklahoma,Texas,Kansas,& Missouri. hands down the Golden Smoker award goes the PIT BOSS AT THE CAPPS BBQ RESTAURANT in Okmulgee Oklahoma,American...
Read moreNote: I've read the other reviews and I'm sure they have their act together down in Okmulgee, but we were at their new location over by the Campbell Hotel, on 11th St. in Tulsa. I ordered a chopped beef sandwich with a side of slaw. I chose to leave off the bun. The meat was tender. Quite a bit of gross soft pieces of fat mixed in, and pieces of burned meat that were tasty but hard to chew. The slaw was made with wilted cabbage, and not chopped fine, which made for a very chewy experience. Several of the ladies commented on that. The lady next to me had fried catfish and onion rings, and potato salad. I tasted both the fish and rings, and they were quite good. I cannot say that I enjoyed my meal. Yuck. Staff were nice, very nice. They had the heat off for the first 20 minutes we were there, and then turned it on. They were shouting out our names to pick up our food, altho they had said they would bring it out. With so much lunch traffic it seemed they did not have enough staff to take orders and also bring them out. So much fun noise happening, we couldn't hear our names being called out all the way across the room, behind the wall pillar supports and the drink machines. The menu is written in scrawled handwriting, skinny white chalk on a black chalkboard. If they want the chalk "effect" it needs to be plainly written with fatter chalk, different parts of the menu like entrees, drinks, sides, done in different colors. What they have is just incredibly hard to fathom for first timers not familiar with their menu, and it is a huge time-waster for everyone, especially the order takers, I could see it on their faces. You don't know what you want, in 15 seconds of looking at this? Make up your mind please! Ok that's the review. I hope they read it. I think I know what I'm...
Read moreI am in town from Katy, TX for a couple of days and was looking for something close to my hotel. I saw several reviews that were positive so I though "Let's See How Good They Really Are". I missed it the first time - drove right by it and had to circle back. It looks pretty small driving by. I am absolutely amazed at how flavorfully smokey and tender their meats were. My first couple of bites of BBQ is always without any BBQ Suace because I want to taste the meat and see how smokey it taste. I sat there and ate my entire meal without BBQ Sauce because it was THAT GOOD. I did sample their mild sauce and it too was quite good and not over-bearing like some sauces I've had at the bigger BBQ Chains that are out there. As I sat there eating my delicious meal, I watched how the staff interacted with their patrons and it almost seemed like family there, a great friendly - family atmosphere. The young lady that took my order was very nice and gave a good recommendations on the cole slaw as a side. I am very particular about my cole slaw and have only 1 other slaw that I like, from KFC, which she said was her other favorite. I believe their cole slaw is even better than KFC's. I enjoyed the 2 meat plate: sliced brisket, sliced turkey, with fried okra and cole slaw sides. I proudly, and highly recommend stopping into the House Of Smoke BBQ for a great meal and a family atmosphere. Out of all the restaurants that I have reviewed in my travels, this is the first 5-Star review that I have given. You have to try the sliced Turkey and Brisket, it was awesome. Thank you for the great meal. -...
