So I’ve been waiting on this place for a while, my gf lives in Indy and we decided to take a trip to Cincinnati for the day, and on the way back we planned on stopping at Wagner's, they close at 830 but we got there at like 650, there wasn’t a whole lot of folks there but we did end up waiting till bout 7:20 to get our food but! They had just dropped the chicken so when it came it was fresh so I didn’t mind that.
I got a Dunkel to drink and it came in a frosted mug and boy was it good! The coleslaw was good (and I don’t eat just anybody’s coleslaw) but they put it out right when we ordered so it sat on the table for a while until we got our food but we ate on it here n there with the fried pickles which honestly I could have just got 2 baskets of. The mashed potatoes were mid and the green beans were the same but a generous amount of salt n pepper elevated it, the brown gravy was homemade but was solid, the chicken was good fresh of course, and that skin sheesh I could just eat the skin by itself but nothing about the chicken tasted dry or unseasoned or old I could easily just go there for the chicken n gravy and a beer alone with the cobbler they gave me for my birthday.
This is my first time trying southeastern Indiana fried chicken and I found this place on the Indiana chicken trail so I kept a pretty open mind since there seems to be a lot of competition and I think it was a good intro to it all, Oldenburg was a nice little place with German history and even the streets are in English and German and I spent time in Germany so I was able to geek out just a little bit and take some nice pictures, it was also a nice going there from Cincinnati.
I’d recommend chicken out the Indiana chicken trail and see what’s close by to you before heading to Wagners because on the way back I told my gf that it’s definitely a nice pit stop for a break and good food but I wouldn’t go totally out my way for it.
Somebody once said that Wagners was the Bigfoot of Indiana many people have heard of it but nobody has actually been there so it was overall cool to...
Read moreI drove 45 mins driving family to meet other family at this restaurant, having been told the chicken was great and they had won an award. Thats great for them...but I don't eat chicken on the bone. I did a Google look up and saw differing menus from different time periods including 2 years, 7 months and 3 months ago. I did check their Facebook page, again seeing more than one menu with one containing something other than chicken and one that did not. STRIKE 1.
Walking up to the restaurant we see that there are quite steep stairs at the entrance and no visible handicap accessible way to enter the building. We are told that only wheelchair bound folks are allowed to use the back entrance and be assisted THROUGH THE KITCHEN. STRIKE 2.
We had a table reserved for us and were seated. The menus had only the chicken dinner (18.95) or a fish n chips, chicken fried steak, or cheese stuffed fried shrimp option that were all $15 and were A. Not something I will eat, and B. More than I wanted to pay for something I won't eat. There were some appetizers listed-bar food. They have either a family style dinner or bar appetizers. No other choices. Who does that???
The waitress dumped Slaw juice on a member of our party and, while she helped clean it off, there was no offer of a discount for this happening. STRIKE 3.
5 out of 7 members of our party were not happy with the experience today. The Potatoes were boxed flakes, the green beans were straight from a can, and the gravy had a layer of grease on the top and rippling through it. Those who ate the chicken did say it was good-but not worth the drive or the experience or the money paid. All in all a sad time. Oh- I had leftovers in the fridge that I ate...
Read moreI have not ordered Wagner’s in years even though I live in Oldenburg. Criminal, I know. Our family ordered a whole chicken, a quart of mashed potatoes and gravy, a quart of green beans, a pint of slaw and the Mac and cheese bites. The total was $83. At first, I thought OUCH. However, after a couple of bites it was so WORTH IT! The chicken is addicting! I’m a voluptuous woman and I still can’t tell you the last time I sat down and ate a whole chicken just me, one adult and one child in one setting! We got the whole chicken for leftovers. NOPE! Nada! The price really makes sense because it is fried in cast iron and lard, the potatoes are REAL and the perfect mixture of smooth with a few yummy tater lumps in every other bite. The gravy was homemade chicken gravy. I’m not a slaw gal, but the fam was quiet except for their snacking gums so I’m going to say that was good, too! The green beans were perfectly seasoned. The Mac and cheese bites…. Meh. Kind of tasted like the smell of paint. I won’t mess with those again, but that is just a frozen app and I’ll try a different one, next time. Two tiny little criticisms ONLY because I like to give my full thoughts, this would never change my mind if I went back or not, but would have been so lovely to have some dinner rolls. I guess I could have asked and not assumed. The only other thing was I called at 4:00 on a Saturday and they said that carry out would be an hour. Not a big deal but worth noting in case you’re starving. Definitely will...
