Max's Grill & Sheep Shedde Inn restaurant in Olivia Minnesota

Went to Max's Grill on Wednesday July 10 2019 with two adults. We found this restaurant from Yelp for the area we were driving in on the way back from a two day photoshoot in SW Minnesota.

The restaurant is located on the south side of Highways 212. The restaurant is attached to the Sheep Shedde Inn and has a large parking lot with plenty of spaces. (We did not visit the hotel, but there is an attached indoor hallway that will keep you out of the elements.)

We were there for lunch and there was a seat yourself in the bar sign. Not too many other folks in there, and there were high tops and booths available for dining. There is an outdoor seating area that I think was for the restaurant - it wouldn't be high on my list to sit outside and look at tractor trailers drive past. Bathroom was clean, and the women's restroom has two stalls.

The restaurant had a special of Salmon Burgers on an onion bun with pasta salad. We both opted for the Sourdough Patty Melt.

Let's talk about food!

SOURDOUGH PATTY MELT ($11.50) Grilled with fried onions and finished with cheddar cheese, we selected french fries for our side. After the fact it seemed odd that our server never asked how we wanted the burger cooked. I like rare and the burger arrived in a state that couldn't get any more well done. Lesson learned for next time, ask for level of doneness. The bread seemed more like a Texas Toast than sourdough and everything that came off the cooktop (burger, onions, bread) tasted like the Salmon special. French fries were also fried to a doneness level that made some of the smaller pieces hard. The fries also had a fishy taste to them too.

If we stop in Olivia again we would likely try a...

I gave two stars(too generous)…one for the room rate, and one for the comfortable, clean bed. This hotel should be bulldozed. Supposedly, there have been renovations, but you can’t tell. Room was very outdated and musty smelling. Huge permanent carpet stain in the middle of the room. Bathroom was atrocious…faucet looks 30+ yrs old, mold on ceiling in shower, hole in the wall behind toilet, trim around bathroom door frame is pock marked and rusting through chipped paint, tiles missing around tub, wooden bathroom door(probably 40+ yrs old) is chipping and splintering at the bottom, and bathroom door lock also doesn’t work…got stuck/locked in the bathroom more than once…finally opened (thank God)! Worst part of the bathroom was the beetles crawling around on the floor…yes, that’s what I said, beetles(plural)!|The door of our room was also a joke as far as security goes…the chain lock on the door could be yanked off by an old lady with arthritic crippled hands. Front and side doors of hotel are not locked…anyone can come and go freely…absolutely no security…in fact the doors to the rooms are still an actual key. Scary!|What’s more disturbing is that the above issues have most certainly been brought to the hotel’s attention before, and it all has been ignored. I have never reviewed anything…this is my first time. This place is an embarrassment…shame on the owners! This is the only hotel that I’m aware of…or you have to drive another 1/2 at least. I will never stay here again, unless they bulldoze and rebuild.|I was booked to stay two nights, but couldn’t stomach the thought of beetles crawling in and around my feet in the bathroom for another night...

Worst service I've ever had. Service is always slow, but this time we waited several minutes to be seated in an empty restaurant. Had to go get our own beverages after 15 min of server not bringing them or checking on us. Food came out slightly above room temp. Also placed a to-go order at time of regular order so it would be ready when we left, the order hadn't even been put in when the server cleared our plates. There were a couple other tables that didn't get much service while we were there, despite an almost empty restaurant. I've been there a handful of times, never having had good service, but this was awful, the worst I've had. A previous time I visited, I called in an order, that they chose not to make until I got there, they wanted it to be "fresh" but we were in a hurry, thus the reason for a call in order, so i had to wait while it was being made. I normally leave good reviews, as I'm generally happy with most service. But I've never had a good experience in this restaurant in the 6 or so times I've been here in...

Last Friday, we were looking for places to fly to for the proverbial $100 hamburger. I knew Olivia had a place close to the airport. From the reviews, it looked like a decent spot to try. What a great choice! What a great place! Olivia is not the biggest of towns. However, Max's must draw from a large area. The restaurant was way bigger than I expected. It was a short walk from the airport and we were in the cozy surroundings of the large bar area. Owner Traci served us. Very friendly. Very prompt. I had the Cajun Wings and an order of the Buffalo Blue Chips. Both were good. One of the other two I was with had the Reuben. He said his was good too. Would I come back? For sure. In fact, I will add this to the list of places to fly next time I'm looking for some time in the air.

So happy we stopped here! We were on a roadtrip and when looking up a place to eat I was enticed by photos of the bar, didn't even look at the menu. We were so happily surprised by the amazing menu! I gotta recommend the Baja Chicken Sandwich, and the Crispy Corn Capitol Bites. Everything was cooked perfectly, made with great ingredients, and served by a very friendly and helpful staff. I hope to return.
