Driving in downtown Olympia I was struck by a desire for coffe and a pastry. Unsure of options, I opened Google maps and asked for 'pastry near me'. San Fransisco Street Bakery came up as an option close by where I often take walks along the sound, but one with which I was unfamiliar so I decided to check it out. What a delightful discovery. It's a cozy neighborhood bakery and sandwich shop with all the coffee options you want. Very extensive selection of bakery goods as well as bread and bagles. The prices are much less than I've become accustomed to paying in general and the quality is outstanding. I ordered a 'bulid your own' sandwich which was turkey and swiss with pesto mayo and deli mustard with lettuce, tomato, and cucumber on fresh sourdough bread - $9.95. Also I had a double shot breve latte which was one of the best I can remember having, an almond crescent, and a coule of almond bars to take home. The almond bar was a sublime cookie bar of slivered almonds with a thin layer of caramel on a rich shortbread base. The sandwich was just delicious and quite large. I took half of it home. I haven't eatten the almond crescent yet except to taste the crispy, flaky end and was delighted to find it generously filled with almond paste filling. In addition the staff is upbeat and friendly, there is in door seating, an outdoor seating area surrounded by gardens. Convenient parking just across the street. I will definitely be returning to San Francisco Street Bakery to sample their selection of bagels and various cream cheeses, and I'll be...
Read moreThis was my much anticipated first time coming to this bakery, I had heard great reviews about it. My Dad had been here a while ago and loved the caramel sauce in his coffee he had gotten here and the baked goods. I understand that there was limited capacity and maybe due to our excitement we were googling the baked goods alot. (They looked delicious!) What afforded lack of stars in this reviews was the staff. First off, my father is hard of hearing and with plexiglass and masks is has made it that much more difficult to read lips and put together what others are saying to him. He had a hard time ordering, and due to them not having the same products for coffee they had last time he was at a bit of a loss. We even asked for suggestions and the answer was " I don't know what you want". This young lady with the Santa Cruz t-shirt was very rude. Saying things under her breath like "If you could make up you mind sooner than later", and " I don't how else I could say this to you" . We were given the impression that we needed to leave and had inconvenienced her enough. I really WANTED to like this place. To add insult to injury after opening our bags to our order we did not receive the Danish that we had paid for. I usually always give hefty tips to service staff. Being in the field, I understand. This time however, a little grace from the staff would have made it...
Read moreThis bakery is The Neighborhood Gathering Place we locals love and trust. The service is slow (so I never go there if I am in a hurry); otherwise, it would be too crowded... Everything they serve is delicious and of high quality: breads and pastries, sandwiches made to order, soups in cool weather, with a deli cabinet that includes pizza crusts you can take home to make your own, imported cheeses, locally smoked salmon year around, and more. Selections are better early in the day before they sell out. In the last hour before closing bread sells at a two for one price!
Owners Gene Otto and Judy Mendoza are now gradually passing the business down to their grown children Carmen and Nolan--an Otto family tradition for 8 or more generations.
The past year or two the SFSB has begun to serve dinner Thursdays through Sundays. Dinners feature choice local seafoods, meats, salads, fantastic pizzas made to order and baked in their big baker's ovens, super fresh greens and vegetables from local organic farms. Wines are by the glass or bottle--again, well chosen. Dinner service, unlike bakery service, is quick and attentive. Portions are generous. Prices are reasonable. Lovely little place that captures the...
