Howard’s, what can I say? My family has been dining here for over 30 years, beginning when they were on south 24th near Joe Tess Place.
It has always been my “go to” place for Mexican fare. It went through a rough stretch a few years back when Joe and Deb were having some health issues and the quality went down. We actually quit going for nearly a year.
However, it was sold to the owners of Sam’s Leon and one of them, Lorenzo, can usually be found there now. It had a much needed facelift and the food quality was a step up and they also added some new items and open now on Sundays.
Lately though, things seem a little off. We dined there last Friday evening March 8th and I had some of my usual dishes and they just didn’t seem to be on point. I was really disappointed.
Also, I have mentioned several times to some of the old wait staff and to Lorenzo that they need to invest in a Salamander to bring the food to a very hot serving level. The food for the most part comes out lukewarm. They continue to serve it this way and quite frankly I am getting tired of it.
One if my sons who now lives in Florida always has to go there when he comes home. He always gets the Jumbo Beef, Bean and Cheese Burrito smothered in Red Chili and grated cheese on top. When served the cheese doesn’t even melt and it’s barely warm. He always ends up taking a couple of bites and then has it boxed up and takes it home to heat up and eat 30 minutes later.
It would be ashamed to see them continue to serve food this way and would likely end my long tradition of eating there. Especially when I drive all the way...
Read moreA good place for a Mexican breakfast. I got tired of the usual bacon, eggs, pancakes and waffles that everyone offers and went looking for a place that offered Mexican dishes for breakfast.
This is my first time here, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I ordered something fairly safe, Chorizo and Eggs. I got a heaping portion of scrambled eggs with chorizo sausage mixed in, refried beans, withsome lettuce and diced tomatoes. Potatoes were essentially steak fries, I think they could have done better there. Also included was my choice of corn tortillas. On the table were two kinds of salsa as well as ketchup. The salsas were supposed to be hot and mild, the 'hot' salsa wasn't very hot
My partner ordered an omelette, it was good sized and had ham chunks on the inside, along with a couple if slices of toast and some fried potatoes, a better choice than my steak fries.
The prices were slightly higher than I expected, but still reasonable. Service was very good.
Parking is below street level behind the restaurant, people with walking difficulties may find this place difficult, I didn't see an elevator, only stairs or a trip around the building as you climb a hill. It fronts on a busy street and there didn't appear to be parking by...
Read moreWe wanted Mexican on Saturday and haven't been to Howard's for years. I was not impressed. The place smelled "old" like dusty and carpets that need cleaning. Entering from the parking lot involves either tramping up some scary metal stairs that look like they might collapse at any time, or going in the lower door with no idea of where you'll end up when you go through a dimly lit hallway then upstairs to emerge in the middle of the dining area, or if you are disabled you park on the south side of the building and walk up the hill to the front door. Hubby has heart issues so none of these options were terrific. Going down the outside stairs when we left the kitchen door was propped wide open. I get the need for ventilation, but pretty sure this also lets in the flies... The food was just ok. I got a mixture of items and found the taco to be good, but the tamal fell apart immediately and had minimal meat inside. The beans were average and the rice was pretty tasteless. The entertainment was beautiful, a solo singer with his guitar and this was the highlight of the evening for me. We probably won't return with so many better options for...
