I was starving and it was a Thursday night, about 7:15 at night. I was in the mood for lasagna so I called Uptown 101 who have really good lasagna to see if they had it (normally it's a special, not a regular menu item) and they didn't. I then called Milano's, a place I haven't gotten food from in years, but they didn't pick up the phone.
Then I remembered George's. Despite it always seeming to be a popular place I've heard good things about, I've never eaten there.
I pulled up their website and discovered they not only had lasagna, they had online ordering, which I prefer.
But I soon realized their ordering system on their website is their own. They don't use a 3rd party system like many restaurants. At first this seemed fine as the design was well done, but when it came to check out after completing my order I discovered I had to register for an account. This seems obsessive. Why not just allow guest check out? Every other restaurant does.
So I registered and went to login but it wouldn't let me. There was no error message. I went to re-register but it said my e-mail was taken, but that meant it did go through.
After a frustrating few mins I gave up and decided to call.
Note: Later I received an e-mail asking me to confirm my e-mail address to complete registration. Again, why is this necessary to order food from a restaurant? Regardless, it came way late.
When I called they answered promptly. I told them I wanted the lasagna and she said it came with a side salad and asked what dressing I wanted. I should note that on the website there were options to upgrade the salad and add a protein, both of which I'd done on the website, but she did not give me any such options. I was so hungry and over it by this point I just left that stuff off.
"It'll be about 40-45 mins" she said.
40-45 minutes!? Sheesh! I know this place is popular but wow. I can't think of another restaurant in all of Oxford that takes this long.
It was also expensive at almost $19 for some lasagna and a little salad!
Nevertheless, I waited 40 mins, showed up and it was ready. I will say the staff were friendly. I got my food and went home.
The verdict? The lasagna was... fine. It wasn't anything special. It was a good portion, but not worth $19 and waiting almost 40 mins to get it.
The side salad was fresh and...a side salad. Nothing special. Honestly, the best part about the meal was the balsamic vinaigrette. It was flavorful with a great consistency. I don't know if they get it out of a bottle or it's house made, but they should be proud of that if the latter.
I didn't try the garlic bread.
Would I go back? Probably not. At least not for the lasagna. If you want a really good lasagna, I recommend the one from Uptown 101. They don't always have it, but when they do it's on special. It's better tasting, the same or slightly bigger portion size and a lot less expensive. It also comes with a side salad.... and it won't take 40 minutes for it to be...
Read moreWe had a party of 7 because my sister and her family came down from Maryland. George's has always been one of my favorite places to go. I talked up your restaurant to my sister for 2 days. When we got there it was a bit crowded. So we were told we could wait at the bar and there was a wait time of 15 to 20 minutes. So we go back, sit at the bar and wait for the bartender so we could get some drinks. After about 15 minutes we go to the front of the restaurant where we find out that there is no bartender tonight because the bartender never showed up. So one of the servers came down and gave six of us either a mixed drink or a beer. Within the next few minutes a woman shows up, she has a little bit of an attitude and takes her jacket off and throws it on the chair next to us. She Walks Behind the Bar and tells us that she is sorry but she was not supposed to be here today and that she was in the middle of watching a movie at the Henderson movie theater. After about 30 more minutes, we asked the bartender if we can at least look at some menus because no one has brought us any yet. At this point we are starving and just want to eat. No matter where we are sitting. By this time a little over an hour has already gone by and we have not even made our order yet. There were a group of eight they came in after us and we're seated before us which obviously made us upset. We told the bartender that we were there first and that she can ask the girl at the front desk who wrote our names down to be put on a waitlist. We asked her if we could order some appetizers, and we did, but at the same time we put in our meal orders so that hopefully we would get our food all at one time. But it did not happen that way. First my six year old nephew got his chicken strips and fries. A few minutes later two appetizers came out belonging to two of our guests, but the people are the other end of the table we're not served for another 20 minutes. So now everybody is hungry, and agitated, because we are watching someone else eat. We complain to the manager, she said she would take care of it and within a few minutes two more people in our party were served leaving out my sister and her husband. They are the reason we went out in the first place. We made another complaint to the manager and she said the burgers will be out for the other two in a few minutes. By this time the other people at the table have already eaten more than half of their food while my sister and her husband watched. They refused to take our food even though we offered. So we complained again. By this time we had been sitting here almost 2 hours. Service there was absolutely ridiculous and as many times as we had to complain, and as long as we waited she only gave us a senior discount and the only senior that was there was my mother. So we spent over a hundred and $20 and only got a $4 discount off both tickets. I think it was absolutely ridiculous how we were treated and served....
Read moreOk. I have moved back to Oxford from a town that has a variety of restaurants to chose from for a nice meal that is not fast food. However, this is my 2nd take out experience with this restaurant that has been horrible. A month ago I just thought that it was the youngsters that did not care about customer service (which is a thing of the past) or their jobs that would just brush you off when your order is not ready. Granted, for the volume of customers this locations has I truly understand that things will happen. However, It continuously happens to me. We ordered a chef salad, chopped steak plate that was supposed to have rice with it (but it did not0 and a small pepperoni pizza. We were told that it would be ready in 20 minutes. So we went to other stores and got there 35 minutes after we called. When we arrived I paid the young lady and she went to retrieve my food and came back to say that it waws a wait without explanation. Then another young man with dreads went to check my order and stated that they are waiting on my pizza. I said alright. I seen that he had a small pizza in his hand and he proceeded to walk it outside. I asked was that my pizza and he said no. 15 minutes later I am still waiting. I was offered a tea for my wait, which I appreciated but the entire time the young lady and the young man with the dreads just walked past me with no updates on my food or anything. Finally, another young man came and asked the name of my order. He went to the back and just told me that they gave my pizza away to another customer and that they would have to make me another. I understand mistakes happened but I knew that the guy with the dreads had given my pizza away. The food here is pretty good however, your front desk workers are really terrible. Kudos to the young man that was finally honest, however this place have young people that know nothing about customer service and I think the drive out of town for better service and quality may be worth it at this point. You stand a better chance of getting quality service if...
