If you’re looking for a unique and comforting dining experience, Der Jaeger is SO worth the trip! It is unpretentious, cozy, and it felt like being invited to a good friend’s house for dinner.
We got started with the most delicious bread basket (the pretzel bread was insanely fluffy and I went to bed dreaming about it). While your food is being prepared, you can walk around the restaurant since it doubles as an antique shop! There’s even an upstairs area with SO many cool finds (unique prints, patterned Tiffany lamps, and the interesting character or sports-themed knick-knack) so you can peruse while you wait for your food.
For our dinner, we got some side dishes for the table to share: the spätzle is perfectly chewy and buttery, topped with a crunchy breadcrumb. Also sprinkled with those toasty lil breadcrumbs are the potato dumplings, fluffy and soft on the inside. Personally, my fav side dish was the cucumber salad, which was acidic and bright with the help of some finely chopped red onion and lots of fresh dill. For dinner, I got the Kassler Rippchen (smoked pork chop) and not only was it massive, but juicy and flavorful without being overly salty. I tried my fiancé’s pork schnitzel and it was also so comforting, crispy, and delish (and of course, you gotta order it “a la holstein” so that it comes with the gorgeous drippy egg). Finally, I sampled my mother-in-law’s Chicken Paprikash which had a creamy, rich paprika-flavored gravy over chunks of tender chicken.
We of course had to get tea and coffee (they even made us decaf!) to have some dessert. The Black Forest cake was a generous slab, served with whipped cream and ice cream. I didn’t try the apple turnover, but it came with the same “sides” (and according to the table folks, was really really good).
Some other notes: make a reservation because it is a cozy place and seating may be limited! Also: it is BYOB so bring that bottle of wine (or some German beers) to enjoy with your meal.
I’ve never had a meal quite like this, so it is worth making the trip if you are in the pocono region! The food is clearly made with love, and the best is that you’re eating it in an eclectic lil...
Read moreAfter owning a home nearby for sixteen years we finally found this hidden gem of a restaurant tucked away in an antiques store. This is the second time we have eaten in this unique place in three weeks, this time dining with my out-of-town family.
Reservations are a must because everything is cooked to order by Sylvana, the owner and trained chef. Janusz, her husband handles the outdoor barbecue end of things and Joe, our server was patient with our questions and a great guy. Eating here is like having dinner in their home. Their personal attention, warm personalities and attention to detail are unparalleled. They love what they do and it is obvious. The menu does not have prices but that’s not a problem as dinner is reasonable especially considering the size of the portions. Sylvana sets the prices based on the size of the portions and the size of the cuts of meat. Very fair. After ordering, take your wine (it’s a BYOB) and explore the store that is packed with art, WW2 artifacts and other antiques. There is no place like it ANYWHERE! Things that we loved included schnitzels (better than we had in Austria), warm potato salad, spaetzel pork smoked pork chop. Don’t miss the sausage sampler but bring your appetite. Fresh breads accompany your meal. These are great people who put their heart and soul into serving their customers. They enjoy a great conversation which made us feel more like friends rather than strangers. Can’t wait to get back there to visit them...
Read moreDer Jaeger is not to be missed! Sylvana and Janusz served home cooked, authentic food that was absolutely delicious! My husband and I dined at this fabulous place last Friday. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately. Reservations are required as only a small number of tables are available. The highlights of this dining establishment are many - the bread basket is super special. A home baked bread sliced thin with butter and raisins and cinnamon tasted almost like dessert, but was delicious, moist and wonderful. The pretzel rolls were also tasty! As was the rye and pumpernickel too! Moving on to sausage sampler with sauerkraut. Do not miss this spectacular treat (Janusz makes this outside on the grill and when added to Sylvana’s sauerkraut, it’s a winning combination.) Our main meals were also delicious. My husband had Rouladen and I had the veal schnitzel. Homemade, delicious and the best ever! For sides we had the warm potato salad, the cucumber salad (both scrumptious), red cabbage (the best I’ve ever had) and a homemade spaetzle that was so delicious, it rates off the charts! The Apple streusel is not to be missed! We thank the owners for their wonderful hospitality, their talent in the kitchen and a meal we will remember always! Wonderful...
