Krekels — Restaurant in Pawnee

I happened to be passing through Pawnee and I went by here. Being from Springfield, I figured I'd stop in to see how it compares to the one in Springfield. It seems to be in nicer shape but they have a lot of broken/unused equipment stored in back of the seating area. They should get rid of all of it if they don't need it. One quirk is that the bathrooms are outside and not inside. The soda machine is behind the counter compared to the one in Springfield. It's just a really odd layout. I wanted to get some photos but read below and you'll get an idea on why I didn't.

I walked in there and the first thing that hit me was all the locals started looking at me but that's expected in a town of 2,700. I ate as quick as I could and I took off as felt like I didn't belong there. I'd say take a friend or two not to look out of place if you go here. Purchased Philly cheese steak and Texas style fries.

STRIKE ONE: Tried to pay using debit card. Woman directs me to credit card machine. I start putting in my info, notice it says ATM on it. I ask if it's going to charge me extra. She says yes, $1.30 more. I pay cash. If i hadn't asked, she would've charged me extra.

STRIKE TWO: When I received my sandwich and fries at my table, I asked for steak sauce or A1. Waitress tells me she wasn't sure, but she'll check. She never came back.

STRIKE THREE: The cheese steak had some greyish "cheese" sauce on it. There was a very strong sour taste (food poisoning is most likely imminent) accompanied with the sopping wet bottom of the bun. I took the meat and "cheese" from both sides and using the top bun, created something that was at least passable as a sandwich.

I just moved here from New York City and despaired of ever having a decent hamburger again. I couldn't believe this tiny local place had such great burgers! (update) My family and I still go here all the time. The burgers are really delicious, but the patties are thin (which I think is fabulous because they have this great crusty edge) so order a double. The fries are nothing special imho, but the custard is great and unbelievably cheap. Totally worth a trip. As far as I'm concerned this is the best cheap local food in the area.
