We had been to this restaurant a few times previously and had decent service and food. I would start by saying we badly want this restaurant to improve and survive in our area since higher end food options are extremely limited unless you go to Columbia. That said, I would say the evening we visited was a bit of a disaster for the establishment. Overall, the restaurant was not super busy with most bar seats and some tables available. We chose to have dinner at the bar. First, we noticed a Dept. of Agriculture auditor conducting an audit for the establishment rating. The result of that was a downgrade from an A rating to B as we ate. Several other issues arouse, including the hostess becoming ill and sitting on the floor at the hostess station for an extended period of time with staff huddled around her. It wasn't a good look, and she should have been assisted to the back of the house instead of remaining there as patrons were looking at the situation. While at the bar, we noticed a couple next to us ordered the wedge salad, and when he cut it open, the lettuce was all brown, so it was sent back. As far as our personal experience, my wife found a small piece of champagne bottle foil in her water glass, which had likely fallen in the ice bin when the bartender was opening a bottle. Second, our ordered salads took quite a while to come out. I ordered the blueberry salad with fried oysters on top. The salad came out without the oysters as the kitchen had just dropped them in the fryer, and the bartender didn't want to keep us waiting any longer. They finally came out on a separate plate. The salad supposedly included candied pecans, but there were so few that I didn't even realize it until the bartender pointed out a few small pieces in the salad. Nowhere near enough to compliment the salad as intended. Our dinners came thereafter and tasted fine, although presentation was just ok. The seared tuna came out in 2 large chunks rather than sliced as most establishments do, although, as I said, it tasted fine. The stuffed chicken breast also tasted fine, but again, presentation was blah. Lastly, the bartender had an old bandaid on his finger and should have been wearing a latex glove.
Chophouse of Chapin seems to want to promote and price themselves as a high-end restaurant but has a bit of work to do to meet those expectations. We will likely return to the restaurant to give it another chance, but not...
Read moreUpdate- we went back and gave them another chance and it was much better. We had a great time. The service was great, the appetizers were delicious, and the steak didn't taste like burnt grill this time! We had a fantastic time. So I'll be changing the 2 star to a 4 star. I would do a 5 star but I still find the service charge to pay with a card a bit tacky. Overall we definitely enjoyed it.
My husband and I went last night for my birthday. We didn't have a reservation but we were promptly seated. There were only a couple other tables. The service we received was great. We got the steak bites appetizer which was good but I did think the portion could have been a little bigger for $13 and the bread that came with it was more for garnish than anything because it was so hard and greasy you couldn't eat it. On to the entrees, we both got a 12oz ribey which were $31 each and came with 3 potatoe fingerings (no side) which was fine we ordered the large bacon Mac and cheese ($10) to split. Our steaks were cooked to the correct temperature but the issue was the charr. I can't even tell you if the steaks had been seasoned because the only thing you could taste was what I can only describe as unclean burnt grill. And the after taste really lingered. To be fair I did not bring this up to our waitress because I just didn't feel like it would be helpful or that it would be something that could easily be fixed and I didn't want to wait for them to remake it. The Mac and cheese was good and I found if I dipped the steak in the cheese sauce it masked the burt grill taste enough to make it edible. We got a cheesecake for dessert and it was really good. When we got the bill there was a note at the bottom that stared there would be a $4+ dollar service charge if using a credit card which we didn't think much about because we were using a debit card. after we paid I saw the service charge was applied and I did ask about this. Our waitress explained that although it says credit card the service charge is applied to all non cash transactions. I did find it annoying that prior to getting the bill that wasn't disclosed, I've also never had that happen at any other establishment (even fine dining ones) and found it be tacky when they charge more than enough to offset the expenses of processing fees. I don't think we will be going back...
Read moreMy wife and I dined in for an early dinner. I am a lover of a good ribeye steak and was excited about what they had on their menu and had really high expectations. I ordered the tallow aged ribeye, medium rare for 50.00. I was told that it had been wet aged for 30 days and rubbed with beef tallow and aged another 30 days which would make it more tender, juicy and flavorful than just a plain old ribeye. The steak that I received was medium rare but it was neither tender, juicy or flavorful. I started eating and my wife wanted to know what I thought. I said, well it's not tender, it's tough and chewy. I kept taking bites from different sides of the steak thinking maybe it would be different. It wasn't, I also decided that it had very little flavor. I'm usually very tolerant and will let a lot of things go but I had really high expectations, I was expecting something really special. When the waitress came to check on us I couldn't help telling her how I felt and that it was not a 50.00 steak. She took it back to the chef so that he could see it himself and it was agreed that it was indeed tough and gristly. They wanted to do another one for me but I decided that I really didn't want another bad 50.00 dollar steak and said that we would just pay for my wife's meal and my salad and side. The manager asked me to please allow them to prepare another steak at no cost to me, no matter what, I would not be charged and if it wasn't any good I could take it home with me free of charge. So my second steak came out and I'm sorry to say that it was the worst steak I have ever had for any price anywhere and I chose not to take it home with me. I will have to say that the wait staff and manager where very upset and tried to make things right and in the end did all the right things that were in their control. I've read your reviews and they are all amazing. Something has gone wrong with the ribeye cuts at least and it was my understanding that someone else complained the day before. The manager assured us that the executive chef would be notified and address the quality...
