Ok, so we're in Philly and obviously you can't visit Philly without getting a cheesesteak. I went to school here and have heard oodles about Tony Lukes, Pats, Dalessandro's etc. my personal favorite place in South Philly was too far away to bring my good friends visiting from NY and NJ and to be honest we didn't feel like waiting 30-45 mins for any of the ones mentioned so, we settled on Chubbys. Wish I had sucked it up and been patient.
Ordering was easy enough, or so we thought. I have never been before and no one explained the process so we walk in and I order and then proceed to try and sit inside to wait, Philly was WINDY yesterday and sitting outside just didn't make for a comfort meal. We were told that I had ordered from the "take out section" and couldn't sit down to eat inside even though the 2 other people I was with hadn't ordered yet and would have been willing to order at the table. Strike one. My friends order their food and then we wait outside for our names to be called over the loud speaker. Once they call us we then proceed to go over to a tent area outside to get away from the wind and eat our food. We were then told that we couldn't sit in the tent area outside either because that's for waitress ordering....THERE WAS NO ONE. Not a single soul in the tent or section, nor anyone waiting to be sitted that we would be taking a table away from. We were hungry, cold and tired and all we wanted to do was eat our food while it was hot in an enjoyable environment. We then had to settle on eating on some benches outside the restaurant while the wind blew and it totally dampened our experience.
After all this the food itself was C+ quality at best, my cheesesteak hoagie barely had any cheese on it, the meat was kinda "mealy" and the order of fries we had were so small. $4 for a McDonald's sized small fry? Laughable. For all the attitude and inhospitality we experienced with Chubbys I finally understand why they come in the latter places of Philly Cheesesteak choices in Philadelphia. Back in the day I heard they were good but attitude and food have clearly gone to the crapper and I will not return. Go across the street to Dalessandro's. Longer wait time but at least you'll have a hot tasty cheesesteak to...
Read moreI was pleasantly surprised by Chubby’s! Their competitor Delassandro’s (which is right across the street & consistently garners much more hype & praise in most people’s lists of best places to get a Philly cheesesteak) isn’t far & away the better place to grab a steak. Chubby’s cheesesteak meat could maybe use a little more seasoning but when considering portion size, rolls, cheese & pricing I can’t honestly say Delassandro’s is better. This is coming from a native Philadelphian. This isn’t to say Delassandro’s is trash but when you consider there’s indoor seating, a dedicated parking lot for customers, bathrooms, kitschy decor, oh & the fact that Chubby’s also serves beer I can’t see how one cannot take Chubby’s even in a tiebreaker. There are plenty of people that will argue that Chubby’s needs all of that additional help because their cheesesteaks pale in comparison but beyond the meat needing a little more seasoning I was satisfied w/ my cheesesteak & I got a real kick out of what they’ve done w/ the place. Chubby’s most certainly ain’t lackin! Their cheesesteaks are definitely better than the typical tourist trash cheesesteaks @ Pat’s & Geno’s. This is where the real Philadelphia Cheesesteak rivalry is going down! So if you’re an out of towner & want to get a taste of some quality cheesesteaks & skip the nightmare parking scene that is South Philly head out to Henry Ave. & give Chubby’s a spin! The accommodations are far more inviting than Delassandro’s & the food @ both places is neck & neck depending on your preference! Why not try ‘em both?! If you’re in the mood to walk off all those calories or toss a ball around there is a decent sized park right there & if you’re feeling really froggy there’s always the old Wissahickon which is just breathtaking no matter how many times you’ve seent it! I’ll say this as well, ordered some cheese fries from Chubby’s & they were amazing! Just the right amount of crisp & not overly greasy! Definitely looking forward to grabbing some brews, exploring what else the menu has to offer, & finally sitting down inside! Great place to meet up for friends, go on a date, & catch a game on one of their multiple screens! What else could a Philadelphian ask for from a...
Read moreI’m not one to leave bad reviews, but this experience warrants one. It was 11:18 pm when we arrived, the place closes at 12. We were 4 adults and a child and already knew what we wanted. Just moved in to the neighborhood a few weeks ago and noticed the steak shop across the street always looked busier, but I typically support the underdog first. So we gave them a chance, boy was that a mistake. So we walk in, greeted by the nicest girl at the front counter that asked if we wanted to eat in or take out. I wasn’t aware they had seating, so I thought it would be nice to eat it while it was hot. I asked her if it was okay if we sat and she said “absolutely seat yourself.” I feel the need to mention how nice she was, because she was the only good thing about the place. As we’re just about to sit, a clearly in need of retirement disgruntled woman decided that wasn’t okay. From behind the counter she yelled at us that “oh no you need to order take out, we’re not serving another table, we close in a half hour!” Mind you it’s clearly more than a half hour and honestly there was no need to yell. The attitude immediately made me uncomfortable and the nice girl at the front looked confused asking if we decided to order take out instead. I decided that I’d much rather go home and unpack some more then to pay even a penny of that evil woman’s salary. So all 5 of us left and I will take my business across the street tomorrow for lunch with everyone else that’s always lined up. To the owner: perhaps that woman could use some etiquette training or a forced retirement, she clearly...
