Rented electric bikes for the afternoon from Jake, the friendly and helpful owner, and we had a blast. E-bikes are the perfect way to explore the roads in and around Pitkin without kicking up dust, polluting the pristine air, or alarming the wildlife. The only sounds you hear are the tires beneath you and the wind in your ears.
We put 20 miles on the bikes with half of that being uphill, and I have to admit that I used the throttle VERY liberally. In fact, I don't think I ever broke a sweat or even breathed heavily. Having full-time power assist while peddling and then an extra burst whenever I wanted it may have spoiled me forever.
Anyone who is comfortable with using hand brakes should be fine around town. For those wishing to explore the rougher and steeper trails above town (i.e., Cumberland, Middle Quartz, Wuanita, etc) you should probably have at least some familiarity with off-road biking. One additional tip: if you are not blessed with natural seat padding, you might consider bringing along something to provide extra cushion for the seat, especially on rough roads at speed. I eventually wrapped a t-shirt around mine and it helped, but next time I'll bring something a bit more substantial. It was a great experience and has me considering buying an e-bike of my own.
The new owners, Jake and Robin, have done a great job making the completely remodeled lodge comfortable and inviting. It's the best place to...

There is hot coffee, Hot cookies from the oven, and spiced apples for breakfast in the morning and wonderful conversation at the lodge with friendly and courteous people. ||We stayed in the suite and had three adults and five dogs and had the best time. Everything at the lodge takes you back in time of the olden days when there were Mercantileās and country towns, mountain man, and Cowboys. There are beautiful places to visit there. There is so much scenery even if you had a week you canāt see it all you can try and have fun doing it. We didnāt get our elk but it was real nice place to stay and feel comfortable. Thank you very much for all your hospitality John and Robbin. You can but we will be back.|Oh by the way, one of the mornings when I woke up it was only 7° outside but you would never know that judging from the temperature inside the suite was toasty warm, full Kitchen, plenty of beds, personal bathroom, and you get your own...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOur adventure began in the middle of December, and weāre staying through the middle of spring of 2017. We were welcomed like family. Coffee and conversation in the gathering room was offered daily where we came to know and appreciate fellow lodgers and local Pitkin residents. Nothing happens by chance. Paths and lives crossed, stories were shared with life changing encouragements. New insights were gained in our journey of life. ||||My wife and I stayed in the Roosevelt Hideaway. The room was warm and comfortable with a nice view of the valley and the mountains outside our window. It was a memorable and very white 2016 Christmas. Great holiday hospitality was provided by Paul, Robbin and John and others in the mercantile/gathering room ā good food, fellowship and music! ||||In winter Pitkin is a peaceful wonderland. I went snowshoeing up in the hills and took in the awesome mountain scenery. Options include snowmobiling in the area, x-country skiing, and hiking around town. The air is dry with lots of snow, sunshine...
