My husband and I visited the sleepy town of Plymouth for a romantic weekend get-away. We stayed at Rest (fantastic) and were excited to eat at Taste. We were planning on ordering the pre-fixe, but opted to sit at the bar and order from there instead. The bar is a great place to sit as we had the chance to watch the bartender in action (she is phenomenal at her job, BTW) and chat with a few locals. It all led to a really fun evening!
My husband and I like to sample off each others plates and if ordering something we can split, we usually do this as well. The bartender overheard what we were planning and offered to bring everything out in courses as well as splitting the entrée onto two plates. This was fantastic customer service as we've given up asking since many places get irritated at the request.
We ordered the Mushroom Cigars as an appetizer (delicious if you are a mushroom fan - we are!). Our next course was the Taste Sandwich (split and placed onto two plates) and it was cooked to perfection. Our last (and most favorite course) was the Taste Burger with truffle fries (also split and placed on two plates.) Absolute heaven. The burger was prepared to our liking, had amazing flavor, and the truffle fries were crispy and a perfect complement to the beef burger.
We are excited for our next visit to Taste and have a list of things we want to try. There are so many times where we don't think that restaurants quite live up to the hype, but this place is excellent. From the excellent and personable customer service provided by the staff to the quality of the food. Five stars for...
Read moreFinally made it out here! It helps that Taste offers lunch on Saturdays. It is too far a drive for me to come out for dinner.
The restaurant itself is on the main street of Plymouth, which is a tiny outpost of a town in Amador County. A lot of the original wood remains in the building and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. I also noticed a lot of sound-absorbing panels on the walls and ceiling as well as foam under the tables! The eggshell foam peeking out from underneath could be a bit unsightly, but did its job.
When making reservations, I was asked if it was for a special occasion (it was our anniversary). When we arrived, we were seated in a dark, drafty corner. I asked to change which was not an issue.
Overall, I found the lunch menu to be reasonably priced. We tried the mushroom cigars ($5 for two) -- two rolls of heaven in philo dough! The Alsatian tart ($10) was more like a flatbread with duck sausage, carmelized onions and marscapone cheese. Very filling! For the mains, spouse had the Taste sandwich ($15) which was filled with steak, eggs and mushrooms. I had the pork loin with goat cheese tart ($16). The pork was tender, full of flavor and the combination of the cheese with the loin made for a unique combination.
Too full for dessert, we opted out. However (and this is why they asked if we were booking for a special occasion!) they brought out a creme brulee and card signed by all the staff wishing us a happy anniversary! Nice touch.
Wish this place were closer, but makes for a great outing when wine tasting on the weekend...
