All I Can Say Is... Skip the Fried Food! I tried the fried chicken sandwich, and it tasted like it had absorbed every flavor from the fryer's past month of use. Not exactly what I was hoping for! That said, the cheesesteak sandwich was fabulous--flavorful and well-made.
Parking was scarce, and the long wait times had some visitors leaving just as we arrived. We ordered takeout, which saved us hassle. Horne's has a fabulous history, as it started as one store, grew into a chain, only to come full circle and there is only one left. There's something nostalgic about Hornes, even if the food didn't quite live up to expectations this time.
THIS WAS TAKEN FROM Horne's Website: Horne's restaurant chain was primarily located in the Southeast and Southern United States. At the chains peak there were over 60 locations. Beginning in the late 40's Horne's started by featuring sit down full service dining as well as lodging, gift shop, ice cream bar and fuel. Many of the over 60 locations were on major highways hence open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Bob Horne founded the first store on October 4, 1948. The original concept was to sell candies, nuts and souvenirs to travelers. By 1956 Horne's chain had expanded to 17 locations in 8 states. That same year Mr. Horne began painting roofs yellow. By 1963 the chain had grown to 44 units. By 1965 there were 60 Horne's locations. The last company owned store closed in 1982. Horne's in Port Royal is the last of the line and still features many of the original designs. We maintain the same core values of great quality and excellent customer service. We highly regard our local customers, our repeat travelers and our single trip customers. With warm welcome come on in have a great meal, browse the gift shop, fuel up and safe travels! Read moreHorne's is an oasis of great food, nice trinkets and plenty of convenience amidst a sea of chain brand restaurants. Deanna our server was so sweet and very attentive to our needs. We were passing through back to home from a Williamsburg getaway and boy am I glad my husband suggested we stop there.
It has a retro diner feel, even down to one of the offered desserts being Pineapple Upside Down cake! If you're a 70's or 80's kid, you are instantly transported back to those parties your parents would throw and someone walk in carrying that and a Jello-O mold.
I opted for a the breakfast sandwich with sausage on a croissant and yum! Sorry endocrinologist's office about my upcoming A1-C levels: THEY USE REAL BUTTER! It was so delicious to bite into the croissant, buttered inside and out, cheese that was smooth and creamy and an egg I think a hen only in heaven laid. Just WOW!
My husband ordered the chicken and fries. It smelled like my VERY Southern mother's recipe. I have to admit I contemplated putting a sliver onto my sandwich to see how it all ties together like that.
Deanna, gal, thanks for the piercing chat in between getting our order to go and being such a great waitress.
We will absolutely return and try more...
Read moreHighly disappointed with my last experience here. I purchased 2 milkshakes to go and they cost over $15. When I went to the cashier (in the convenience store part of the store) to pay - I paid with my credit card and left 0 tip and the cashier yells out, "you're not leaving a tip" loud enough for everyone in the line to hear. It was completely disrespectful and inappropriate. First, what is The US coming to where getting a drink to-go comes with the expectation of leaving a tip? There should be NO obligation to tip, it is a gesture of appreciation on a to-go order - especially when you are charging that much for a milkshake (surely with that type of profit margin you can afford to pay your employees). Second, I did leave a few dollars on the counter but I was so shocked and embarassed by the cashier's anouncement that I just left as soon as I could. Get rid of the young cashier with the nose piercing!!! She's rude, condescending, and running away your customers. The milkshake was good, but I will not give my business to a restaurant that treats me this way and based on how she treated me, I regret making the purchase and leaving a tip. I'll buy a $5 container of Haagen Daas and make my own...
