My family is Vacationing on Long Island, Maine, where we lived for 18 years till 2001. My mother passed in 2015. This year we began our Annual Family Reunion and have once again returned to the Islands of Casco Bay to celebrate my mother and family. On a whim we decided to take the ferry over to Diamond Cove and have dessert at the restaurant my mother loved when she dined there previously. Sadly, we were unable to experience that as the hosts, after scrutinizing us, decided they were just too busy. Upon my first request I was told to go sit in the back.....but suddenly as more of our party of 6 arrived we were told "they were just too busy and there were not enough servers". I told them all we wanted was dessert and coffee. It did not matter. We left and decided to walk to the other restaurant where they also were unable to seat us for 45 minutes. Oddly this restaurant with a beautiful porch area had no tables or bistro sets or even rockers for their guests that were waiting.
As 2 of our party were elderly I thought I would attempt once more to get a seat about 10 mins later. I went into the back area, where there was lawn seating and saw more that 10 empty tables with no one waiting. Hmmmm. So I went back to ask again and they said sorry NO again. So I asked if we could at least sit inside and was told sure....I entered the inside dining room which was empty except for 2 small parties. There would be no service inside there but we could sit. Upon entry it was not very clean and tables were randomly scattered and paired. We decided then we were not welcome and saw a ferry pulling up to the dock and decided to leave......I am not sure if perhaps management was absent or just overwhelmed but the youth at the doors of both establishments were polite but unwelcoming.
I would recommend that anyone who wishes to go to Diamond Cove in the future be aware that not all are welcome as their signs state from the moment you set foot on the dock.....and even in the narrow public areas you ARE allowed to walk on you must blend well or you will not be welcomed,...
Read moreMy partner Andrew and I were married at Diamond’s Edge Restaurant & Marina in September of 2023 on what was one of the best days of our lives. Planning for the event began roughly a year earlier when, after returning to Maine to raise a family, we sought a wedding venue that would highlight the treasured coastal natural beauty while still being close to Portland. We came to find out that Diamond’s Edge Restaurant was the diamond in the rough we sought.
Stepping off a classic Casco Bay Ferry onto the dock, you are immediately transported away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life into an iconic scene of Coastal Maine tranquility (and away from cell service!) No cars are allowed on the island, resulting in a truly relaxed island experience. History buffs also have the chance to explore historic Fort McKinley - a highlight we didn’t appreciate until after the fact. Whether your guests stay at the Inn at Diamond Cove, a vacation rental, or visit for the day, it will surely be an experience they won’t forget.
The venue itself was remarkable on every front. The scene of a tent reflecting on the ice pond is stunning, only exceeded by the view our guests were treated to with the cove in the background during the ceremony The culinary experience was exceptional, and it was an absolute treat getting to choose from their diverse and rich options for appetizers, entrées, and drinks. But what sealed the deal was the amazing staff of the restaurant, marina, and inn. Their willingness to go the extra mile, find solutions, and focus on the details was so assuring, only exceeded by their commitment to Andrew & I savoring every moment on our wedding day. Thank you, Colleen, Erik, Trent, Crystal, and...
Read moreI just returned home today after spending 9 days at the Inn at Diamond Cove and this review is for the wonderful dining experience I had at the Diamond Edge restaurant, every single time I ate there! The Chef de cuisine is Steve Harding, a man clearly in control of the gastronomic delights that grace the diner's table each day. He works his magic with a dish as simple yet sublime as lobster chowder. Lobster is ubiquitous to Portland's seaport and could easily have been a bland non-event. Not so at Diamond Edge! Steve's savory lobster chowder was a nice mix of smooth, rich broth, generous amounts of lobster and the creamiest potatoes ....... so filling that I barely had room for another favorite, the Mexican grilled street corn. The charred kernels and tangy sauce ........mmm. I could do a clinic on how best to eat street corn but instead I'll share this, you will be left unashamedly licking your fingers so do your homework and start with clean hands! These two make for a delicious and filling lunch any day. You may say goodbye to regular corn after you've had this corn for 9 days! I ate only seafood the whole time during my stay. The bronzed diver scallops with fingerling potatoes and asparagus, delicious. The cedar planked salmon, delectable. The pollen dusted halibut, delightful. The cast and crew are also worth of mention. Thank you Jamie, Susie and Greg for ensuring the best food experience I've had while on vacation in a long time. You all made my vacation extra special and I thank you! Steve, thank you especially, for treating every plate served to me like...
