My fiance and I ate here on our week long road trip to Florida and back to Northern Virginia. I very highly could not recommend this establishment less! While I love old style 50's diner vibe restaurants, first off, this place has not been well taken care of. You can definitely tell that the owner and manager here do not take pride in the place and the business. Not very clean, the service was horrible and our waitress had an attitude right off the bat. When my fiance asked for a diet coke, she was told "We dont have anything DIET here." The ice water was nasty and clearly not filtered and tasted like drinking well water. I used the mens room and there was literally toilet paper overflowing from the trash can with feces on it and flies flying around! The bathroom was not clean and sanitary, so thankfully I did not need to sit on the toilet. If cleanliness of bathrooms are any indication of how sanitary the kitchen is, I dont want to even think about that! We both got burgers and fries and the fries were the best part. I love crinkle cut fries! The bacon cheese burger was mediocre and tasted like a cooked frozen Walmart patty that wasnt seasoned. I would have honestly preferred to eat McDonald's. I have no idea how this place got a 90% health rating. Either they were notified before the inspector came and they made sure to clean up, the owner paid the inspector off, or the state has very low standards! I do not like flies and nats flying around my food. Atleast invest in some of those bug zappers that look like light sconces and look nice on the wall. From reading responses to older reviews the management is very rude in their responses. Its clear they could care less about attracting customers and making as much money as possible. I have worked as a restaurant manager for 18 years, and would never dream of speaking to customers the way these people do! Save your time and money! Do not eat here until they make some...
ย ย ย Read moreGlad we didn't pass by this little gem! Found on Google maps and seen it was starred at 4.4 so we decided to stop going back to NC from VA. Homemade southern food is always better than big box chain foods in our opinions. Don't let the surrounding area or the desolate stores keep you from coming here.
The first thing we noticed at this packed restaurant on a Sunday after around 1230 was the people were friendly ! Smiling faces from patrons and workers as we, strangers, walked in. Homemade cakes/pies/banana pudding on the counter. 50s feel with teal walls and leather type material for booths and seats for tables. The waitress was friendly and patient with all my questions. The lady that was busting tables was a hustler with a smiling face. I'm sure every restaurant wished they had 10 of her just looking at her work ethic. The guy sitting beside of us was very friendly and answering my questions on "what's the community favorite." My ham, mashed potatoes, and corn pudding was good. My extra bowl of chicken pastry was awesome! I took it to go for my dinner tonight ๐. So.... my husband's review brought it to 4 stars. They were out of chicken gizzards, Texas Pete, and his stewed tomato's was on the sweet side for his liking. But he did enjoy his black-eyed peas, cabbage, and collards. He suggests requesting the onion and vinegar for these. I was saddened that they don't have milkshakes anymore. The equipment is broken and not in the budget to fix, BUT I hope this little gem gets the business they need to fix this!! A 50s diner needs milkshakes, haha. I hope this review has helped you decide. We will be going back on our next pass thru. Oh....I'll update the review on the banana pudding and chocolate cake...I got these to go bc I couldn't decide. Too many to choose from, BUT the banana pudding is fresh and warm on my lap as I...
ย ย ย Read moreI visited the restaurant around 4:00 P.M. today (May, 2nd).
I was disappointed on the way some of the staff was acting while on the floor. I was made aware of the tension/anxiety between the front of the house and the back (kitchen). I overheard several negative comments. For example, one of the lady servers said in regards to someone working in the back, "She just wants to micromanage because she has nothing better to do". A conversation then took place between two servers about the "micromanager" and how bad she was. In addition, another server said (as a customer was leaving) "he's just crazy". This was said with a very negative tone. All I heard during my time there was deep sighs from the servers, making me feel that their job was a burden. Everyone had sour faces. The staff in the kitchen and the servers were making snide comments to each other. I'm not an expert, but I feel if the back of the house and the front of the house don't like each other, then the only people that surfer are the customers. I don't expect rays of happy sunshine beaming out from everyone, but I felt the behavior made me feel both uncomfortable, unwanted, and wondering what other kinds of problems the restaurant has. When I placed my order, a very young server (who took my order) made me feel stupid because I made a very easy/simple, but (I guess) unusual/crazy request of having a side of cocktail sauce with my hash puppies. "What! You want what?? People eat hash puppies with butter!" I then had two workers ask me how long I have been in the south and if I live "up north". I was born in VA, lived in GA for most of my life, and I now live about 2 min from Oscar's (off of Crew St behind 10th St.) The experience made me feel I should have...
