I really wanted to give the Outsiders a good review. We met the new owner right before it changed from Garvey's to Outsiders. We were very pleased with Garvey's, but were impressed with the enthusiasm of the new owner.
The service was very slow, considering that the place was not even full. I know there is a shortage of workers in the food industry, so I try to take that into consideration, but I was still disappointed. Our server was very nice, so it had nothing to do with her.
We started with shrimp and grit cakes and 12 wings. The wings were good, but the blue cheese was a bit odd. It tasted more like ranch with some blue cheese bits. The grit cakes were very good, but the shrimp on top looked more like someone thawed frozen shrimp purchased from the local supermarket.
I ordered the bratwurst plate. The portion size was very large, which I'm sure many folks appreciate. However, the brat itself was charred and tasted more like a store bought brat. Maybe cooking it differently would help?
My son ordered a burger. Unfortunately, the tomato was larger than the burger patty. Again, it looked like a store bought pre-packaged patty instead of a handmade patty. If it was handmade, adding a bit more ground beef would please your customers and not cost much more.
My wife and daughter each ordered the ruben. What arrived looked more like a corn beef sandwich. The bread was sandwich bread, there was minimal meat, virtually no sauerkraut, a slice of cheese, and only a smattering of russian dressing. It looked like someone made the small sandwich, then threw it in a toaster ovem to melt the cheese, then mashed it for whatever reason. I'm not sure why the whole sandwich was compressed, but it didn't help. If it was actually put on the grill / skillet for a few, it would have helped.
I really want to support Outsiders and hope this review helps them make some changes. As mentioned, I really like the owner's enthusiasm, and hope some unforeseen circumstances created our poor experience. I'd like to give them another chance in a few months, and if so, I'll submit an...
   Read moreI almost hate to rate this high because it might get too popular. It's such a fun atmosphere. Staff is great. It's a perfect hole in the wall bar. I didn't get the opportunity to see any live music but they're set up for it.
Food was pretty good. The menu is fun and creative. Next time I get the pimento cheese fries I'm going to get the cheese on the side so that I can enjoy the crunch more. But man are they yummy.
Parking is great. Huge parking lot.
I do have two observations. The chair legs are uncomfortably tall. I didn't try the high top stools. Maybe they're proportioned better. I have long legs and it still felt like my feet didn't quite reach the ground. And there's a little too much salt in everything. You know beyond the "oh this is delicious" level of salt but before the "ewww I can't eat this" level of salt. Food was still pretty tasty. I just would prefer to salt at the table.
Overall - great place. Everything seemed pretty reasonably priced. Service was fast until they got a little busy but...
