To start, I’m from out of town. The open sign was not on. But lots of cars in the parking lot. I would have missed this place if I didn’t google it first.
Second. The cashier at the entry is for (hunt brother’s pizza). Not for Grumpy’s. I did not know that as I waited at the register for my order.
Then I food was quoted at 15 min but took 30. Not mad about it.
However I ordered (3) steak sandwiches. Each with a different side.
1 with mash potatoes and gravy. (Very cold potatoes and not very good gravy)
1 with fried okra - wow! There okra is off the chain. So good.
1 with onion rings. - this was recommended that I get them and I was sure glad I did. So tasty!
But…. Another turn of events. The steak sandwiches all had a very burned bun taste. I’m not sure if that is a signature or not ? But it was not good. The meat was great. The bun where it wasn’t burned was good. But the sandwich burned was very bad. And I had ate the 3 I ordered in 2 days. As the food I choose to order and eat while driving 1470 miles for two days.
I would love the chance to come back and reorder again I’m sure it would be a different experience eating at the restaurant. But I’m not sure when I would get the chance. The other reviews were the reason I drove 114 miles out of the way to get the food.
Also the atmosphere- it is a small town feel. Not a chain restaurant feel. So pull up to the dinning table and eat your food. Talk and have a good time. Could be loud or quiet.
The embarrassing part was paying for my Togo order in the middle of the back of the Resturant, far away from the front register.
Such a confusing layout. And I wanna be so nice to Grumpys. Because I saw all of their involvement with community and how amazing they are like a staple of the town. My review is only based as a passer by from 1 visit not multiple. But I would have expected consistency from the kitchen, especially the highest reviewed menu item of (steak sandwich) again maybe fresh a burned bun is the signature of the sandwich. But cold and old it was not very...
Read moreSecond visit. I never leave a review after a bad first go. So we waited 5 months and tried again. First time we were seated and waited a long time to only receive one of our appetizers. Then waited over an hour to be told our order never made it to the kitchen after it was said several times that our food would be up shortly. We ended up leaving hungry.
Fast forward to today. Seating was at less than half of the capacity. Our appetizer took easily 20 minutes to get. The food came out soon after. My wife's catfish was WAY over cooked to the point there was hardly any fish left. My wife is never outspoken about messed up food but we had to ask for this to be remade. (Next go was cooked better but still didn't taste right.) Both of her hush puppies were completely uncooked inside. My patty melt was made decently just a little bland. Not anything you couldn't make at home. I understand kitchen staff being overworked but it doesn't mean bad food gets consistently pushed out. I don't mind waiting at all if I know the food will be right. We saw plenty of mostly full plates being left behind. The only reason we added the extra star was for the sweet waitress that was working her tail off to help everyone the best she could. Not all experiences are the same. If you decide to take the chance go in prepared. We unfortunately won't...
Read moreHad the Reuben, dinner shrimp, peanut butter/chocolate pie and blueberry cheesecake. The roast beef on the reuben was amazingly seasoned by itself. I asked for no thousand Island dressing and to replace it with mustard and mayo but all in all, the sandwich is top notch. Shrimp dinner was breaded with SEASONED breading and large shrimp. The onion rings are large in diameter along with a thick onion on the inside with just the right amount of crunch along with the cooked sweetness of a white onion... The peanut butter and chocolate pie is VERY dense as the entire slice has a very pudding-y profile that misses a difference in texture with the cookie crust as it is soggy. The blueberry cheesecake had wonderful flavor with the blueberry compote on top but again is one note as the crust offered no difference in the texture of the pie. All in all, a great experience as our waitress was kind, polite, attentive and knowledgeable as we were just passing through on a road trip but I would definitely recommend...
