El Canelo Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Sabetha

What a diamond in the rough. Stumbled across a Mexican restaurant I had saved at some point previously on my GPS.

Stopped here today as they had truck parking out back and was curious to checkout this place as it was on hwy 75 that I rarely take coming back from Texas on my way to Canada 🇨🇦.

I like usual thumped through the menu and back tracked and ordered my favorite mixed fajitas. 3 proteins, chicken 🐔, steak and shrimp 🍤. I also ordered some grilled jalapenos which I had them cut length wise.

Order started like usual with a coke no ice followed up with chips and salsa.

I was pleasantly surprised once I heard the sizzling skillet heading my way. Let's just say this place kicked it up a few notches. Excellent visuals / plating Quality of ingredients Better cuts of meats 🍖 and larger shrimps used. Quantity: generous portions of everything. Exceptional cooking, nothing under or over cooked. Exceptional service and a great sense of humor from my server. 6.Great decor, beautiful booths and carpentry details.

I really enjoyed the whole experience and the server even brought me out some salsa verde which I used in my meal and as a second dip for my chips. I am going to make it my mission to stop here the next couple trips to try a few more thing off the menu. The food is adequate at best; the chips were stale, and the salsa was decent. The beef fajitas were a massive portion for 1 person; however, there was very little beef, and what beef there was mostly tiny, less than bite size pieces.

The rice was bland and lacking in flavor; the refried beans were sub-par. The guacamole was incredibly disappointing, coming out looking as if it was from the day prior.

The beef quesadilla originally came out wrong, and we were brought a chicken quesadilla. The beef quesadilla was good; however, the rather large chunks of tomatoes could have been left out or cut into smaller sizes.

The guacamole with this plate, however, was fresh and a nice color with good flavor.

The service was good, and we were taken care of with quick service and the right amount of attentiveness.

Overall, the food could use some work. There appeared to be more staff than necessary. The food portions could use with slimming down as well as lowering the prices to match, or increase the food quality to...

OMG! This is my favorite place to stop before heading out...

The food at this restaurant is superb and the pistons are quite generous... you will either be over-stuffed or go home with a doggie-bag!

The atmosphere here is pleasant and the service is stellar. The price is fairly conservative and the time from ordering to getting your meal is just about perfect.

I've been here when it was packed on several occasions and my meal has been served promptly and warm every time.

The restaurant building is part of the local gas station making this a convenient stop for everyone, there is also a little strip mall across the parking lot with a tattoo shop that looks like they do...
