I won a gift certificate in a drawing and so my wife and I went to Beef O'Brady's. It's a sports-bar place -- I counted something like eighteen televisions in the main room. I ordered a Sam Adams wheat beer. It seemed like the best option, given that everything else they had on tap was Bud Light or Miller Light or Coors Light (this is 2013 -- who drinks that stuff?)
Our server offered 16 or 24 ounce beers, but I'm pretty sure the pint I ordered was actually twelve ounces. Strange. It seemed diluted. Also, it was over-sweet, tasting of maraschino cherry juice -- and I realized as I got to the bottom that they had thrown a maraschino cherry into the beer. Who would ruin a reasonably good beer like that?
The menu is huge and confusing -- paging through it takes forever. A lot of the dishes are marked "no substitutions" but our server asked us if we wanted to change anything. Strange.
My wife ordered grilled whitefish. It did not arrive grilled, it arrived blackened and was over-seasoned and too salty. She asked for an alternate side, a double side of steamed broccoli, and that came out fine. I ordered the basic fish and chips with fries, and it was essentially Sysco prepared food, nothing made on-site as far as I could tell. The fish (cod) was good but it came in four pieces, not two, which maximized the amount of batter, so I felt like I was mostly paying for batter. It tasted OK, but the Frymax fryer grease (again, this is 2013 -- haven't people gone off hydrogenated trans fats?) gives an unpleasant mouth feel and my face will be breaking out for a week. The little plastic tub of coleslaw was extremely sugary.
My wife was excited because they offered beignets (French donuts) and so she had one for dessert but was unimpressed. I had the molten chocolate cake, which again seemed to be a Sysco pre-made dessert. Restaurants that don't actually prepare anything seems to be the new thing.
Given the huge number of menu options for burgers, burritos, salads, sandwiches, etc., it seemed odd that there were only two dessert options.
Our server was friendly and competent. I'm not sure why this restaurant exists. It's a weird hybrid of sports bar and family restaurant, diner and chain and seems to have been designed to deliver beer and food that is as bland and industrial as possible. Give me a non-chain hole in the wall with even one specialty actually made from scratch any day. This place was one step up from Buffalo Wild Wings, which was the worst "restaurant" I've ever experienced. I didn't see any incentive in...
Read moreA good friend of mine suggested this place and I'm so glad he did. The service was super friendly, got our orders correct, and timed the food out just right. They also didn't hover but checked on us appropriately. The food was delicious. We didn't get any apps this time and thank god for that because we each got a burger and fries. They were huge and covered in cheese on delicious bread. My friend's burger was called the 'Oh my God'. And rightly named. 2 all beef patties, 4 slices of bacon, I think like 4 slices of American cheese on a brioche bun. I don't remember if it had lettuce, tomato, onion, or pickles since I didn't eat it, but it was huge, well seasoned and buy the look on my friends face absolutely heavenly! Hence the name I guess, LOL! I got the 5 cheese burger. Simply a all beef patty somthered in 5 cheese in regular white bread topped with a fried cheese stick. Yes, you read that, topped with a friend mozzarella cheese stick, but they call it a plank as it's flatter and wider then a normal cheese stick. And that's all it had. A true CHEESE burger. One thing I really appreciated is well I absolutely hate light colored toast. That's not toast, it's just warmed bread as far as I'm concerned. I told my waitress that I truly want my burgers bun/bread really toasted super dark. Dam near burnt. The waitress really listened to me and it's one of the very few times I've ever gotten my bread done correctly. It was a beautiful deep rich dark brown. It was so perfect!!! All that cheese! We each got fries with our burgers. Crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside and perfectly salted. I like my fries more crispy then most. I ordered them extra crispy. They came out perfect. My friends sister ordered some curly fries to go and we each tried one of course. They were perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I didn't eat my full burger or fries because I had seen on their menu that they had a skillet cookie that I wanted to try. They had a deep dish chocolate chip cookie served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and in my case chocolate and carmel sauce crisscrossing on top. It looked like it came off the front page of a magazine. The looks were on par wirh the taste. I was a very full, very happy lady at the end of the meal. Definitely going to put this place in my regular...
Read moreThis restaurant is, without a doubt, the best casual dining spot in the Saginaw area. The sports atmosphere is second to none. Beef's was really the first sports pub in Saginaw that 'did sports' the right way. They actually play the sound to the game! It seemed like they were the first ones to have flat screen TVs that actually received an HD signal! It looks like they have recently remodeled the interior too, with big flatscreens everywhere. Their beer selection is great and always cold, with a bunch of local beers on tap. My wife loves the fact that they have recently added liquor to the bar offerings. My only complaint from a few years back was that my wing order seemed to take a long time...but upon speaking to the owner that day, I learned that they serve only fresh wings and they cook them for 12-15 minutes. Since learning this, I have noticed that other 'wing places' serve their wings in half the time since they are pre-cooked and do not come out steaming hot. Beef's wings are definitely the best that I've had anywhere.
Do yourself a favor and check out the Saginaw location. I have visited other Beef's in Florida for years and was so delighted when a local guy opened up a location in Saginaw. When I met him, I can see why this location has lasted this long. He genuinely cares about his customers and listens to their comments and concerns. It just seems like the other restaurants and local bars in this area are trying to keep up with what Beef's is doing. I live close by and notice that their menu is changed slightly a few times a year. I joined the email club on their website and get coupons sent to me all...
