Remember as a kid, your mom said don’t swallow your gum because it will get all hung up inside you. I am very worried about the cheese that was in the chili relleno.
Before selecting a restaurant, I always scan the reviews and pictures. Especially the pictures. The pictures have more information than most reviews. A fellow Yelp reviewer posted a picture of a live roach that he had dispassionately and callously “Flicked” to the floor. He didn’t describe the outcome on the roach’s wellbeing the after the assault. We can only hope it turned out positively for the roach. I am no entomologist, but in the picture the roach looked like he was healthy and had been well fed. That’s a strong indication that the food is good. Convincing pictorial evidence that got me on the road to Sallisaw.
And it was. Thin crisp chips. Great salsa picante. Fast attentive friendly service. The flavor and seasoning of the food were very good. I like a good mole rojo on relleno. El Toro’s hit the spot. My taco and my wife’s enchiladas, beans and rice made up good OkieMex plates of food. Enjoyable except for the cheese filled relleno.
The cheese in the relleno was most likely made by Wrigley’s or Goodyear; a stringy, chewy, vulcanized mozzarella on steroids. If a cheese could have gristle this cheese would be the one. Even though the cheese was heated to mouth scorching temperatures it maintained its elasticity and only got stronger as it cooled in my mouth. Chewy and tasteless. It was not Monterey Jack. My recommendation is to pass on the relleno until the restaurant switches to a cheese less chewy than a bungee cord. Or get it filled with meat, WITHOUT cheese.
With all that said……I still recommend El Toro! Easy access off I-40. Lots of parking space. A clean, nicely decorated restaurant.

Read moreEl Toros in Sallisaw is our go to for Mexican food. They have $1 tacos on Tuesday if you dine in. They are only regular tacos, no carne asada, but where else can you get a taco for $1? If you don't know what to order they have an El Toro sample platter that is amazing. The tamales will melt in your mouth. If you get the chance try them, you can thank me later. The food is more of a Mexican flavor, not Texmex. Their menu is massive. They offer daily specials, and have a lunch menu til 2 pm. They serve adult beverages. They have a selection of beer, several types of Margaritas and a lot of other beverages as well. The Margaritas are in several different sizes and they literally have a fish bowl Margarita. Please bring a driver if you're going to try that one. The servers are great and they try to make sure your drink, chips and salsa are always full. The parking lot is always full and there's a good reason for that, great food and service. The one thing that I wish, is they would turn down the music just a bit. They also have several big flat screen TV's they watch sports on for the...
Read moreI have been here 3-4 times now and the food has been great up until today. I ordered the quesadilla grande that had sour cream, guacamole, lettuce, and tomatoes on the side with it. With every bite something was off and I decided to smell each individual thing… and when I got to the tomatoes they were absolutely REPULSIVE. They smelled rotten! I had my husband smell them to make sure I wasn’t imagining things. He agreed that they did indeed smell rotten. When one of the waitresses came over I let her know- and no one got back to me about the issue the rest of the time we were there. I rarely take issue and make big deals about things but this is unacceptable, and I am worried I’m going to come down with food poisoning tonight! I have been impressed with El Toro’s food up until now- and unfortunately I don’t think we will be returning after...
