Dec 27 Update! Said I'd be back. GLAD I DID!!! Wife had the Italian sub and I had a great burger! The Italian sub had great tadting and tender meats...wife said it was the best Italian sub she had had in San Antonio. My burger had a good chunk of beef along with grilled salami, and some fresh veggies. I added an over-easy egg to top it off. Delicious!! Included some photos...the burger looks more appetizing before its 3/4 eaten, wapped up and then taken back out for a photo. :-)))) Definitely will be one of our top SA go-to's for subs and burgers!!
Earlier Review: First timer. Service was excellent and the complimentary soda and chips (for first timers) were both unexpected and appreciated! One of the staff led me to the hanging menu board and took my order as I recited what I would be having. Nice touch.
"Rustic" is the word I would use to describe the store's "atmosphere." Clean and had picnic tables for adequate seating. Good selction of chips, drinks and other eats. Had a convenience store vibe to it.
The first and most expensive item (at nearly $13) on their fairly extensive menu board was a "Philly Cheese Steak." I was wary, but decided to throw caution to the wind and order it. I admit I had some pretty high expectations, given their "7th Best Restaurant in Texas" banner proudly hanging outside the premises. But those expectations were also tempered by the fact that I have eaten the real deal cheese steak ("Wit") in Philly, and have had my expectations pretty much crushed on every other occasion of eating so-called Philly steaks outside of PA.
Nonetheless, my mouth was watering when I received my sandwich hot off the grill. Its thin-sliced beef tender and juicy beef...nicely grilled veggies...all mixed in with a (too sparse for my liking) amount of melted provolone cheese. Looked good and smelled really good. Closed my eyes and bit in. The bun was soft and there was a great meat-to-bun ratio. But as I slowly chewed, wanting to really savor that first bite, it struck me there was very little flavor. In fact, I'd say it was outright bland. How can that be? All this gooey goodness and yet, so little flavor? Can you say, disappointed? Had I not already been headed to my house, and in rush hour traffic, I would have returned to the store and asked to try something else.
I'll definitely return to try other menu items - gotta be a reason for that "7th Best in Texas" recognition. Right?? May even give the cheese steak another chance??!! :-))))
Speaking if which, where in San Antonio can I find an authentic Philly Cheese???

Read moreAs a person who takes deli shops seriously, Gino's definitely take the top spot for the best deli shop I've tried in Texas (I've been to over 100 sub shops around the state). First praise is the service, to the gentleman who runs this place I give you my highest respect of not only how you talked to me and my wife, but absolutely every single person who came through that door. You made us feel the most welcome we've ever felt since moving down here to San Antonio. Second praise is the atmosphere. As a gentleman who has traveled all over the world and espically the North east US I've grown acoustom to walking into a convience store with a deli shop connected expecting the best food to touch my mouth. This was the expectation of this place and it was met.
Third praise is the food. I ordered myself a Philly cheese steak loaded with everything on it. I've tried hundreds if not thousands of different Philly cheese steaks and this place hands down is up there with the greats. (This is the best Philly cheesesteak I've had in Texas). Second sandwich was an Italian, this sub was served hot and every meat on it tasted fresh, as well as the veggies. Again, this ranked as one of the best tasting subs I've ever had.
The only bad I can say about this review is I made the grave mistake of taking it to go. These subs deserve to be eaten fresh at Gino's so you can truly see why they literally have thousands of five...
