I regret to announce the death of a very dear and old friend. Coconuts at Casa Ybel on Sanibel has been killed by its new owners. Friends and I have spent a lot of good times and a lot of money at Coconuts over the past decade. It was always the fun place to go on Sanibel beach for drinks and fun times with some great bartenders. This unfortunately is now all gone. What is left is a fetid rotting carcass of something great like that of a dead whale that has washed up on the beach. You know it use to be really good but now it just stinks. Management has managed to drive off almost every bartender with a personality leaving the rest to huddle meekly in the cabana barely able to speak to the customers. The service has degraded to the point that you have to go to the bar and fight to get someone’s attention. Occasionally some tool of a manager bumbles out to show himself but does not even speak to the staff let alone the customers. Fortunately I do not stay at Casa Ybel or I would have packed and gone home by now. Coconuts was a mainstay of our time at Sanibel. I celebrated many a birthday there. This will likely be the last. The place was always over priced but at least the staff treated you like they wanted you there and ensured you had a good time. New management has killed that feeling. I do not mind spending too much money somewhere if they at least give me a kiss when it is over. New management at Casa Ybel now gives you a gut punch while they rob you. I recommend you find another place. That...
Read moreIf I could leave them 0 stars I would. We have been coming to Sanibel for nearly 30 years, For many years coconuts was one of our must stop locations and was very much a tradition for us. In our most recent visit we were shocked to find out that Chris the bartender no longer worked there. It quickly became apparent that Chris made Coconuts great, they are nothing without him behind the bar.
Service was terrible, staff looked unhappy and annoyed and were slow to take orders. Food was overpriced garbage, and by no means up to the standards that most Sanibel restaurants meet. Hopefully whoever is running the show now gets it together and returns coconuts to a decent place...
Read moreWhile dining at the beachside bar, Coconuts, I had to pinch myself a bit. Silly me I thought I was dreaming, the experience was that exquisite. After a year of pandemic sorrows, I haven’t had the greatest of service at other eateries but that changed at the impeccable Coconuts. After each bite I was basking in the savory taste and wonderful atmosphere surrounding me. I would marry this restaurant if I could. You could say I’m coco-NUTS about it.
thank you so much for the recommendation: Grant, Christine, Lisa, Sherri, Michael, Lily, Tim, and Matt. I owe...
