Please read the negative reviews before making a reservation here. The past two times I have been here were an absolute mess and very disappointing. The first bad experience was when we had a reservation and did not get seated until an hour later. Then, a server dropped a wine glass right next to our table. It shattered all over the place, including on my boyfriend's shoes. The server took off without an apology and we didn't see his face again. When we mentioned this to another staff member, they had the glass cleaned up except for a large piece sitting right on my boyfriends shoe which was out in the open. After this, another server completely smacked against my boyfriend's seat and took off with no apology once more. Our last bad experience was just yesterday (7/19/20). I wanted to surprise my boyfriend with an anniversary brunch. I made the reservation for 11:45AM. We got there about 10 minutes early, so of course I expected to wait just a bit for us to be seated. However, we did not get walked over to our table until around 12:00PM. I had called and requested to be seated at a table with a view and was told that it is noted on their end and they would do their best to accommodate us. The gentleman that walked us to our table walked right past three open tables where I requested to be seated and led us towards the very back. When I mentioned that I requested to be seated towards the outside he immediately gave an attitude and said there are other people that have booked a reservation before I have and that there are larger parties. First off, if our reservation was at 11:45 and no one had been seated at those three tables yet, as someone that made a request to specially sit in that area, I find that the right thing to would have been to seat us there. Second, he said that those are for larger parties but every table had only four chairs. He then walked us over to a high top that was outside of the tent mentioning it's the best seat in the house. Yeah right. We immediately were blinded by the sun, started turning red and I got a headache. I forgot to mention that he asked if we would like water and it never showed up until our server offered some about five minutes later. After a few minutes we couldn't stand sitting there so my boyfriend went to the hostess to try to move us but she started arguing with him and nothing was done. Someone then came to our table to set down plates and napkins sloppily. He set up my boyfriends side fine but he place the napkin in front of me, didn't know where to put the plate so he put it off to the side. He also just left the steak knife just sitting in he middle of the table We then mentioned the seating situation to our server and she spoke to who I believe was supervising at that time of day. At 12:30 PM she came to our table and finally walked us over to our new table. My boyfriend then explained the situation to her and she just laughed it off saying "just ignore him" (referring to the gentleman with the attitude that initially seated us). We thought it was a joke at this point. Our new server asked if we would like to get started with bread and we said sure... only to find out after we get the check that there is a charge for it now. Even though it wasn't much, that is something that should be mentioned and not said nonchalantly. Our food was good, but drinks were mediocre. No one acknowledged it was our anniversary either despite mentioning it twice and having it noted. Once we got to valet, he told us there is. $15 valet fee, which is obviously expected but my boyfriend jokingly said "another $15 after that service we just had?". The valet guy immediately got defensive and said "well how much did you just pay for your meal?". To have a negative experience two times in a row is very disappointing. I hope something is done to improve the way staff handles things. You have...
Read moreBeautiful! Amazing beach views with indoor comforts and tinted windows. We attended for a sunset 80th bday dinner. The tables closest to the left window area almost feels like you're dining on a pier over the waters during high tide. The right tables were great too and had the rest of the beach. We visited during 620pmish to 8pm sunset in June, and the sun wasn't too harsh against the windows. Regarding too much UV, the windows also have shades that can be rolled down for harsher sunny moments. Food: We recommend seafood and appetizers!! (Steak and Pork Chops were unfortunate misses for us that night but think it might be just that night, since another friend had a different experience). $19 Valet (takes credit card, cash, etc). Wagyu Beef Roll and Shrimp Cocktails are a must!!
This location is open again!!! Secrets out via @losangelesfoodiegirl. We got so lucky to book an 80th bday celebration here within only 1 wk RSVP!!!
Rsvp via phone or OpenTable. OpenTable for some reason shows a lot more availability than via the phone. I got a text the day before our running date, then a call in the morning to confirm. They definitely will make sure you'll make your RSVP. Most of the view tables can fit up to 5 patrons. We were a table of 5 and fit semi-comfortably. Behind these tables are booth seating for 2 which looks very comfortable. Upper deck level with larger groups also offers amazing views Overall, the restaurant is tightly spaced, and the tables are close together but with enough space to still pull your seats out and squeeze through. There will be alot of movement traffic between staff coming through the walkways. *Tip: Add the celebration occasion (bday) and honored person's name (my mom), and they'll customize the menu with her name and HB on it. *Tip: Make a note or call to request where you'd like your seating. Window seating is to guarantee. We arrived 30min early and got lucky with not waiting too long.
Waiting area: There are 2 seats. There is a bar too. There's outdoor benches near the valet area. I recommend strolling over toward the beach area of the parking lot. There is 1 small bench, and a great view of the restaurant with the beach. Pictures will be difficult to get during evenings around 6pm but still possible. Caution: Don't stand around there around 7pmish or high tide moments with the water splashing over the cliff to that area.
You'll be greeted by staff, including different managers to make you or the celebrated person feels special.
Food: $5 bread service. *$31+$ extra shrimp: Shrimp cocktail was amazing!! They were able to add another shrimp so that each one of us (party of 5) got a piece. I might try their lobster (cut into 2 pc) instead. $22 Fried Calamari uses dairy in its batter. SO thought it was okay but the table ate it all, so I think everyone else definitely enjoyed it. *$37 A5 Wagyu Beef Roll was delicious!!! Its a must for me! $18 Iceberg Salads looked really good. Our table of ppl seem to have enjoyed it and ordered it extra chopped. Sadly, the 2 different steaks to pork chop was overly cooked. The $49 pork chop is edible just with their apple sauce, which I was told that was incredible. One the steaks were taken back because it was super over cooked and it came back still unevenly cooked. Our $89 aged steak was overcooked but not as obvious. It was unevenly cooked. I'm glad we didn't complain about it because I just think their grill just may run hot at this location? Or it's uneven fires? Or off day? Update: A friend visited and really enjoyed their steak. Maybe our might was an off night? $57 Seabass looked like the best entree at our table. It's made with butter, and not for me. I have interest in visiting again to try this dish. $16 Brussel Sprouts $16 Cream Corn $16...
Read moreI came here to treat my partner to a lovely birthday dinner and ended up BEYOND happy with the occasion, food, and treatment received!!
I made a reservation and mentioned that it was my boyfriend's 27th birthday, so they added a personalized note to the menu to commemorate it and ensured we received excellent treatment and a had a wonderful experience throughout the entire evening!
Starting off with a pair of cocktails, I thought they were all very creative, strong, and full of various flavors! The Purple Mist was my personal favorite - it has a purple color (as you may suspect), flavors that both come both a bit strong and others that are more subtle, as you might suspect, and includes an edible flower! Alongside these we also got a basket of bread and some clam chowder soup. The bread came in several varieties and were all great quality, and the soup was absolutely delicious. I felt it was the perfect way to start the evening, warm the stomach, and dip some of our bread into!
For the main course, we split one of the 16oz New York Strips for $70, which for at least, was MORE than enough for the both of us. The steak came cooked perfectly medium as requested and (I'm admittedly not a huge steak connoisseur) tasted delicious! My personal favorite dishes are what most people would probably consider the sides, so I was in love with the Lobster Mashed Potatoes ($40), White Cheddar Mac-N-Cheese ($15), and Creamed Corn ($15) that we ordered to accompany the steak!! Everything was so creamy, cheesy, and absolutely delectably wonderful!
Throughout the evening, the service from all the staff was very friendly and helpful, as this was our first time visiting a Mastro's. For dessert, we had a couple more cocktails and they provided us with a little 'Happy Birthday' cheesecake! It came with loads of whip cream on the side to dip your bites in if you so desired and was the perfectly sized dessert for us, as we're not the biggest dessert people!
The views and vibes are also immaculate - we were directly by the window but were still able to enjoy the gorgeous view outside as the sun began to go down. There's also a few lovely areas just outside the restaurant for some photos - if you so desire.
To close, Mastro's Ocean Club in Malibu is the PERFECT location for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions! We were wonderfully treated throughout the evening, enjoyed everything we ordered, and would certainly be happy to return in the future!
I felt this was an excellent value for the quality and ambiance of...
