I was born in Nebraska but left soon after. We returned often to visit relatives. My maternal grandmother lived very near Clarkson, NE, which had a wonderful bakery featuring kolaches and other regional and ethnic treats.
When I read about Pietz's, I immediately thought of my childhood and that bakery. I decided to stop there on my way east from north central South Dakota. Scotland being due west from my destination in Iowa.
I was not disappointed. The little shop was wonderful and staffed with friendly, accommodating people. I'd never tried Kuchen, but I bought several to take with me on my trip. Friends and family were impressed and loved it. I found all the flavors from my childhood, poppyseed, prune, apricot, and rhubarb. I found several I'd not tried, too. Strawberry, peach, and others I couldn't fit in my cooler. I was impressed and certainly glad I stopped.
I found out they make kolaches as well. The Kuchen was excellent, but kolaches are my favorite, a generous dose of nostalgia thrown in. Next time, I plan on sampling a generous selection of them, too. If they're made with the same care and craftsmanship as the Kuchen, I know I won't be disappointed.

Read moreVisiting Pietz's Kuchen Kitchen was definitely the highlight of our trip through the USA. The Pietzs were the nicest people you will probably ever meet, no doubt. Not a question was left unanswered and we left with the biggest smile we had in a long time! We just had time to try the Kuchenettes, but they were absolutely fantastic and the crust was the best I had ever tasted. We cannot wait to try everything!
