I discovered this restaurant when I Googled “food near me”. It happened to be the closest of only 3 choices, the other two of which were closed. This spot was maybe 50 yards or so (or 200 perhaps, I’m bad with yardage and square feet) from the b&b where I was staying, so I thought I would walk over and see if there was a good outside spot where I could sit with the dog, get something to eat, read my book, and maybe have a beer because after all, I was walking home from there! Though some reviews were awful, all those since it’s been under new ownership were spectacular, so I felt it was a good gamble. Nothing like betting on the only option available!
The staff was warm and friendly and the instant feeling was welcoming (which is a serious plus when you are a single diner walking into a restaurant with a poodle). A young man led me to a back patio where nobody was sitting and he turned on several outdoor strings of garden lights. It was so charming. I sat reading my book and enjoying the rustic fresh air while I waited for my dinner (I ordered the special that evening; tacos). The warm muffled sounds from inside the restaurant added a cozy wonderful feeling outside, and I felt like someone getting fresh air while at a party in the country.
The tacos arrived and they were amazingly delicious. Soft corn tortillas, the most tender, flavorful steak, with the perfect bit of crunchy (cabbage maybe, I don’t remember), and a tangyish sauce that harmonized perfectly. I was in heaven. They were that good. Some other people came outside and they eventually invited me to join their table and we shared lots of good conversation. That’s just one of the beauties of traveling alone (or with a poodle), and happening upon a seemingly empty little town. The people who don’t seem to be there eventually get hungry and seek out good food (and spirits). They find it and this promotes good conversation and out of the blue, there is a friendly oasis in a desert.
Oh yes, I ordered dessert. I wish I could remember what it was called. It was remarkable. If I had received this dessert at a fine dining restaurant, I would have still walked away surprised at how outstandingly delicious it was. It was a lemon cake, but so light and delicate, not overly sweet but exactly sweet enough. It was like a soft voice that knows its power is not in being loud. The gentle texture and consistency was so perfectly paired with the flavor, I could tell that whoever made it was very skilled. It wasn’t just any dessert.
The beer was very good, too!
this place is an iconically historical morsel of enchantment. I will definitely go there again the next time I am in that area, though based on my first experience, it will have a lot...
Read moreStayed at William Tell House for 2 nights as a convenient base for exploring the Point Reyes region. Was travelling with a baby so contacted the hotel beforehand to see if they could supply a crib which I was told was possible. On arrival at the hotel however no crib was provided and as no staff on site this couldn't be fixed. This was disappointing as the ability to provide a crib was a big part of our decision to stay at William Tell House.||Beds were comfortable and the coded door entry worked well. Plenty of parking available. There was some noise from the bar downstairs however this stopped at 9pm so wasn't a problem. Room seems to have been hastily decorated with poor attention to detail - lots of uneven paint lines etc.||We had dinner in the bar downstairs one night. There were no vegetarian options on the menu and the staff member serving couldn't have been more disinterested or unhelpful in suggesting something on the menu that could be adapted. My husband had a fish sandwich that was raw in places...
Read moreI only went to William Tell House to have dinner with my family and a few close friends. It was lovely, the service was pleasant and reasonably quick; the food arrived together for the most part and was delicious. I am a growing young man so I did eat half a hamburger, which was delicious, moist and creamy; two fish tacos which were fluffy and lightly breaded with an excellent creamy sauce with radish and cabbage as well as the pork tacos which were perhaps my favorite but only because of the delicious salsa that was on top of them. Later I also managed to stuff down two pieces of their pumpkin pie which is baked right down the street and was so tasty. Perhaps my favorite was the friendly atmosphere of the building, high ceilings, well lit and decorated making me feel right at home and no matter where I sat the vibrations of the live music was delightful, I went on a Friday night so I think they hold events weekly...unsure. Anyway, a lovely spot in a...
