Decided to give a place a shot I hadn't tried before, since we were too far out from Llano or Luling. We split a 3 meat plate and got a couple extra sides. Figured whichever meat we liked the most of we'd order a pound of and split to finish up.
Meh. We never got that far. Finished what was good and tossed what wasn't, then headed somewhere else.
Sausage was pretty good, but a little dry. Required sauce, which it might not have if it were fresher. 3/5
Pork Rib (the one and a half that came on a 3 meat plate) was decent. Seasoning was solid, but there was more fat than meat going on here. Hooray for flavor I guess. 2/5, dropped from a 3ish because just about every other 3 or 4 meat plate I've ordered in Texas has come with a pair of pork ribs if I chose them.
Brisket was a solid 0/5. Flavor wasn't there, meat was dry, and it was tough. Absolutely wish I had tried the lamb ribs that looked promising, ham, or literally anything else. Cardinal sin in Texas.
Sausage is the clear winner between these three meats.
Tried the Mac and Cheese, Potato Salad, Beans, and Onion Rings. (Cole Slaw was sold out.)
Onion Rings came out as above average, nice cut of onion and a well balanced onion-to-batter ratio. Just greasy enough to get the point across, but not too greasy.
Mac and Cheese looked runny and milky. Tasted the same. Almost no flavor.
Potato salad might have been cold mashed potatoes, mayo, a touch of sour cream, and dill pickle. If there was anything else in there, I couldn't taste it.
Beans were comparable to canned beans. Not the good ones. The cheap ones.
There are definitely gimmicky, corporate, or just bad concept BBQ restaurants this place will run beat in a head-to-head.
That's it though. Whatever magic this place once had, or whatever spark got it television spots, wasn't present when I tried it. Can't...
Read moreThere’s “Texas Local” and then there’s “Local Local.” The latter involves one supporting a business that has direct roots in its community and the success of that business directly influences the success of the family that owns it and, in turn, ideally influences the success of the community. Davila’s is a true “Local, LOCAL” business that you can’t get anywhere else in the state except for right here in Seguin, Texas. I know because try as I might, food like Davila’s BBQ- or specifically, their exquisite brisket burger, is not available anywhere near the Cap/Metro area where I live. There’s something sublime about the crisp outer edges of that smoked meat paired with the soft and wet ground beef that’s akin to crispy bacon on a supremely prepared burger patty. That kind of alchemy happens here. I get the draw of other “name-brand” Texas BBQ joints that you can get in in this and surrounding cities- I really do. ...and as a BBQ loving Texan, I wouldn’t dare poo-poo on the good name of these institutions. What I will say is, if you’re rarely around Seguin and have a hankerin’ for some solid BBQ (especially that aforementioned burger which also got a worthy shout-out from a certain “monthly Texas magazine”), then check out Davila’s BBQ. Their service was warm, friendly and expedient and great. One of the pitmasters was happy to share our enthusiasm with a tour of the smokers! I’m rarely around Seguin but for me, making the 1hr. trek there is worth it if I’ve got some podcasts, time to kill and a want for a serious burger worthy of being...
Read moreI recently visited Davila's BBQ in Seguin, Texas, and I had a fantastic experience. The food was amazing, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was very inviting.
I ordered the two meat and two sides plate, and I had the brisket and sausage with green beans and macaroni and cheese. The brisket was cooked perfectly and was incredibly tender, while the sausage was flavorful and juicy. The green beans were cooked just right and had a nice smoky flavor, and the macaroni and cheese was creamy and delicious.
The service at Davila's BBQ was also excellent. Our server was friendly and attentive, and she made sure that we had everything we needed. The owner also came to our table to check on us and talk to us for about 10 minutes. He asked us where we were from and if we were enjoying the food. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the barbecue, and he made us feel very welcome.
The atmosphere at Davila's BBQ was also very inviting. It's a small, family-owned restaurant with a rustic feel, and it's the perfect place to enjoy a delicious meal with friends and family.
