My friends and I wandered into Roberto’s yesterday. Roberto’s has a subtle luminosity—soft and warm, inviting. Still an hour from opening, Roberto welcomed us and made "Mexican Latte's": hot expresso poured over shards of spicy Mexican dark chocolate and blended with steamed milk. It is complex and nutty and semi-sweet and little bubbles with specks of dark chocolate sat on the creamy brown surface that looks like particleboard.
Roberto’s is the perfect size—small enough to feel intimate but not confined. The black bottoms of the split painted walls and the black bricks that separate the kitchen from the front provide contrast to the lovely and imperfect honey-colored wood floors. Everything else is light and airy.
Roberto started the kitchen early so we could have lunch. He suggested a split pizza, half "Roberto" and half "Hanna Bella", his signature combinations. The crisp pizza was thin and firm and airy pillows of charred crust formed the edges. "The Roberto" is chunks of tomato, Italian dry salume called Soppressata, sweet marinaded red peppers, fresh mozzarella, and a hint of honey. The Soppressata was rich and flavorful, but not greasy. The other half, "Hanna Bella", had ricotta and Pecorino cheese, caramelized onions, spinach, roasted garlic, and truffle oil. Truffle oil can overpower food, but this was lightly present; it was faint and good.
None of the toppings fought for attention; they all blended nicely and didn’t soften the crust. The half-meat and half-veggie combo appealed to everyone.
I had never been to Sheffield but will return soon to visit Roberto and enjoy his pizza in this lovely bistro. Highly...
Read moreI recently attended an outdoor live music event at Dewey Hall and, when helping with cleanup I was offered a taste of some pizza that had been donated by Roberto’s.. I couldn’t resist. And it was delicious ! I knew I had to then check out the actual shop. I also thought it was so thoughtful that Roberto’s donates to local non-profits, supporting the greater community. When I had a chance to check out the shop, I found it to be adorable.. both inside and out! There is the sweetest little outdoor hut set up and tables with candles.. it is small inside with a cozy vibe, lovely wooden tables and higher bar-type seating enjoying a window-shop view of passers -by.. the staff are super sweet and efficient. I have since tried several different varieties and I have loved each pizza.. actually I find the crust to be equally as good as the toppings! On the thinner side with a crispy edge, slightly burnt in just the right way! The owner is often around, helping out in all manners , back of house one minute making pizzas, then running up front to hold the door for a customer.. overall excellent customer service, clean environment and wholesome flavors from pizzas to meatballs to delicious local ice cream scoops! I hope anyone visiting the Berkshires gets a taste...
