When we travel, we look for places to eat that you can't find in every town, something with cooking like from scratch, not pre-frozen or from the Sysco truck. We avoid the major chains, even at home. When we entered the building it was like stepping back into time when eating out was a special treat. The server was dressed nicely and was courteous, the food was tasty and the appropriate temperature, prices were reasonable. We even had attractive paper placemats (it has probably been ten years since I've had a paper placemat). Except for a light dust on the window sill and blinds, the fabric benches were clean, the wood wasn't worn, and the dining area was very clean. The carpet even looked and felt clean. This might not seem like a big deal, but the last place we ate at, I was afraid to look at the benches too closely because they were so unappealing that it would make me nauseous to make eye contact with the stains and all the tables had wear marks (every single one). To eat at Country House was a treat. The food for the most part looked and tasted close to fresh or homemade. Someone at the next table had a problem with one of their meals and she replaced it in minutes. We had the appetizer sampler, ribs, and trout and everything was very good (except the green beans which were mushy in texture). The side salad was one of the best we've had in a long time and even had fresh mushrooms. Dinner reminded me of eating out in the early 70s, which isn't a bad thing. It was relaxing and a treat, what eating out should be. We will definitely come back next time we are...
Read moreUpdate - second visit Very few customers were in the restaurant. We ordered, and waited. A couple came in and were seated. They ordered, taken by a different server than we had. Their breakfast came and we were still waiting on ours. We asked, and our server said it was being prepared at that moment and gave a dishonest excuse why the other table was served before us. They were over half finished eating when we were being served. When she finally brought our plates, she said they were "hot off the grill." One of the them was hot. My plate, however, had lukewarm/slightly warmer than room temp food, and trust me, an omelet is awful when not hot. My toast was also lukewarm. So, they did cook mine but failed to cook the rest of our order until we were assertive about how long it was taking. We will not be going back or recommending this place.
Original review Surprisingly quiet for having a majority of tables occupied. No noisy customers trying to talk and hear over each other. Better yet, no obnoxious music coming from the kitchen or over speakers. The server was friendly and attentive. The food was just "okay" - we've had better, so that was a disappointment...
Read moreToday was our second visit to this restaurant. We wanted to give them another chance after the horribly slow service and mediocre food we experienced the first time here. To be fair they were very busy and under staffed then.
Today the restaurant was busy however there were plenty of staff there to handle it. We were seated quickly and ordered coffee and our food. However, we had to wait 20 minutes to get the coffee and never did get our meal. Why? Because while waiting for our food we saw multiple people walk in after we did, sit down, order their food, finish it, pay, and walk out.
I'm a white guy and my wife is Chinese. I'm not sure if that had something to do with the long wait or maybe they serve the regulars first.
After waiting for 45 minutes the restaurant was mostly empty and we still were waiting for our food. So we got up, left some money for the coffees and walked out.
We live five minutes away in Sierra Vista. However, I will never go back to this restaurant. They burnt a bridge we me....
