Okay...first let me say, my husband is from Mexico & we go to Mexico often, or cook at home, or eat at my MIL's house. My BIL was the one that found and suggested this place...he LOVES IT, none of us live here, we're here a few weeks every year, for a job, we travel nationwide.
So far, my husband & I have gone with him my BIL, my SIL (their sister) went with them for Breakfast on Mother's Day and had Menudo. The other 2 times the guys got caldos (soups), my husband said they were good but didn't rave like my BIL. My husband and I make Caldo de Pollo (chicken soup), Caldo de Res (beef soup), and Pozole regularly at home & use fresh vegetables, this place uses frozen vegetables, my husband didn't even eat them here.
Let me also add...with Mexican food, i have high expectations, especially at restaurants. I'm white, so I order the "white people" food bc I figured with easy food, it should be EASY and more likely to be good. So that my expectations are more likely to be met.
Let's just say...if invited a 3rd time, I will stay home and eat PB&J instead.
The first visit, I got a Chicken & Steak Quesadilla...it was essentially meat only, with a very small amount of cheese in the tortilla under all the meat, served with a bed of lettuce, sliced tomato & guacamole (not real avocados), no rice, no beans, which is typically how Quesadilla appetizers are served.
On our first visit I saw on the menu what is called Sikeston Cheese Dip...I assumed it would look/be like the photo...cheese dip with a bit of fajita-like meats: chicken, steak, & shrimp in a pool of cheese dip. When my BIL suggested going here tonight, i reluctantly said yes & decided to order that tonight. What I got was: chicken, steak & shrimp, with a HINT of cheese dip, i guess for $13 i got my meat's worth fot the money. I had my husband ask for more cheese dip, maybe because he didn't explain why he was asking for it?...the lady brought a small dish of it (on the receipt what we got charged ADDITIONALLY for...was the 4oz cheese dip), I think another $4? So...$17 total?
We ordered what I expected to be a side of rice for our 2yo...we got a plate of it, which is fine, but got charged $3.75 for it. The Micheladas were nothing special but cost like $10 each. In big cities for that price you get nearly a meal in a cup (meat, vegies & a beer). Don't get me started on the amount of ice...but it seems to be that way everywhere in this area...more ice than liquid.
Our ticket for 3 adults and a toddler that ate 3 spoonfuls of rice, 2 Michiladas, 1 soda, 2 shrimp Caldos, a taco & a Sikeston Cheese Dip and charged extra for more cheese dip to almost get what I ordered, was $90! No telling what the meal was last time, my BIL paid, probably similar or more. I expect these prices from Bigger cities, maybe even Cape, but not Sikeston, I mean I know inflation and all...but...
If it were anywhere else, my husband would have complained. But bc the owner (seems to have more personality than the others we've encountered) told them his whole life story...my husband said nothing. With the owners' LONG History of restaurants, you'd think they'd try harder or just be better at everything.
I'm sorry, I'm not from here, so I don't have to worry about hurting my neighbors' feelings. So I was being honest about my experience. I'm sure my husband & siblings will return a couple more times, if I do get talked into going, I will likely sit and eat the included chips and salsa or maybe get a plain cheese dip. I think I saw Flan on the menu, I might try that.
The people here seemed nice enough, I guess, they didn't even attempt to talk to me.
I guess if just MEAT is your plan...this is DEFINITELY the place to go!
I saw other reviews mention the music...the music was only coming from the kitchen, the guys mentioned how they even had good music, unfortunately couldn't really hear it. After reading the...
Read moreI was really looking forward to trying El Oaxaco Mexican Restaurant, but it ended up being a huge disappointment. I ordered a margarita, and it was terrible—barely any tequila, and it cost $10. I had to order an extra shot just to make it drinkable, which set me back another $5. On top of that, the salsa tasted like a generic store brand, and the chips were stale.
The final straw was the rude staff. I didn’t even bother ordering food after that experience. Definitely not worth the time or money—won’t be...
Read moreGreat restaurant! The Midwest isn’t known for Mexican food..but this place should be on everyone’s radar! First off, it was the only time I didn’t need to doctor up the salsa for flavor, that’s a good start. I had the Parilla burrito with Steak and my husband had the Salina’s special. We both kept commenting how good it was! The margarita was delicious also. The waiter/owner was a good guy checking on us and making us laugh. Do yourself a favor...
