I was super excited to try Big Grove because I love the one in iowa city. I should have taken the servers suggestion. I ordered the Indian pork pita and was extremely disappointed. First, I wasn't expecting the pita bread to be grilled. I was not expecting a flat bread when this meal was listed under sandwiches. You cannot fold this and eat it. 2nd, there was maybe about 1/3 to 1/4th cup of actual meat. I took out the mint because I'm not a mint lover. I kept the spicy shatta on the side, but did enjoy the flavor of that. It was mainly grilled pita bread, and leafy greens. I scraped off all the pork and just ate some of the grilled pita bread. I did like the seasoned fries. NOT worth the $17 they charged. My daughter got the kids grilled cheese, which wasn't bad. The bread was thick. We got the wings, which were huge and I really liked those. They made a raspberry iced tea, which was sweet tea with raspberry flavoring. I've had better. On top of all this, the meal took about 40 min to get to our table. I might go back to try something else. I'm grateful the server took the Indian pita meal off the bill, so that was a nice surprise, and wasn't expecting that. The service was super, I think her name was Ali? Went on a Sunday night at 6 and was able to sit outside right away.
UPDATE First, after posting my prior review, I spoke with management as we had left an item at the restaurant and called to check to see if they still had it, which they did. They also gave us a gift card to come back and try them out again. We went last night. I got the fried chicken sandwich (lightly breaded) and added cheese. We also got the cheese burger (added an egg), and 2 kids meals. The chicken sandwich was really good! I'm glad I did light breading as that was perfect and I feel any more breading would have been too much. My partner really enjoyed his cheese burger. The kids mac and cheese is house made, creamy, and good. The kids chicken fingers are out just a smidge cooked too long, but was still good, a good size portion, and filling! Plus, the kiddos each received a complimentary chocolate chip cookie, which was really really good! We had the same server Alli, and she once again was great! I'm really happy we gave them another try, and will...
Read moreWe made a destination drive to your brewery from Davenport this past weekend. We had not been here in 2-3 years, but we always go to your IA City location.
We were extremely disappointed in our service at the bar. The main bartender (seemed to be training the other one) took minutes to even acknowledge us; when we were asked if we knew what we wanted we requested a menu for food and beer. Approximately 8 minutes later, my husband caught one of the bartenders and asked for his beer and a water for me. He got his beer within 2 minutes, 8 minutes (yes, I timed it) I was still waiting for my water...even after asking a second time for it; she said the other "girl" was taking care of it. Another 5-10 minutes went by when she finally asked us if we knew what we wanted; we said the check, we were "one and done".
It also would have been nice to see a smile, much less a thank you.
We realize it was a Saturday at 11:45 a.m. While they were busy out on the patio the bar itself had 12(?) people in it (four were a family sitting at the bar next to us, 2 were children probably under 5 years of age who while were very well behaved we felt it was inappropriate that they were sitting at the bar and it made us uncomfortable).
This was our third trip to Solon; the first experience was awesome, the second was questionable, this third visit will be our last and it is highly unlikely we will revisit the IA City location again either. There are too many establishments in IA City, North Liberty, Kalona, etc. While we travel most every weekend to breweries, unfortunately yours will not be revisited.
This is only the second time in 40 years I have a left a comment on service. It is not my intention to get anyone in trouble but save future customers from our frustration, and Big Grove losing business because of...
Read moreI've been visiting this location regularly since the beginning. During my most recent visit, I ordered stir fry noodles with salmon. The fish was served undercooked. When I pointed this out to the server, she became quite condescending and informed me that the fish is cured and served that way. If it weren't for the attitude, I probably would have let it slide, but there is no way I'm going to tolerate being treated this way, by someone who is there to provide an enjoyable experience for me and my party. I returned the fish and ate the remainder of the meal. After this point, our server generally avoided our table. My water ran out and was never replenished. After we all were done, the server appeared with a properly cooked piece of salmon. I was not expecting the replacement, but that was fine. I mentioned that I was apparently not sophisticated enough to eat cured fish, to which she rudely scoffed and agreed.
My suggestion to the powers that be is that if you intend on serving salmon in way that is not traditional to the region, mention it on the menu or have the server mention it when it is ordered. And at the absolute least, train your servers to check their attitude when the customer has a valid concern about the appearance of their food.
I've visited this and other Big Grove locations around a few hundred times over the years and I have never been treated so rudely by such a fragile and arrogant...
